Help Me Please! Is This 90% Silver Nickel an Error or??

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Tired-of-Cards, Feb 19, 2015.

  1. Hi Everyone! I rejoin you all after a long time away, with a very exciting find! I was given this coin at no cost, from the owner of a local pawn shop. He knew nothing about it. I had to point out to him that it was 90% Silver!!! He had to confirm by doing some test, where he rubbed the edge of the coin on a black pad, and then applied a drop of some solution onto the mark...He confirmed it was Silver.
My guess, is that a silver dime blank, was accidentally struck in a Nickel planchett. It is in good condition, the size and weight of a Dime, very thin on one side, thicker on the other, and no 'Dime' ridges on the edges. Also, it has toning(telling me it is old), and appears to be from the sixties(guessing from experience searching boxes of Nickels.)
Looking for expert opinions of what this may be, and may be worth. Thanks as always, I appreciate your help!

I'm not sure I have ever seen anything like this before. If you do not get any satisfaction here from the others, I would send it out to James Wiles for a possible attribution. That would be the cheapest way to go.

Just by the pictures, few things bug me:
    1) The crispness of the strike and details right near the edges (incomplete edges mostly)
    2) The uneven shape of the planchet (how out of round it is)

Now, details can be crisp on a Nickel>Dime strike, and there can be some distortion of the planchet, but it just looks off to me. It looks like a "64" peeking out of the coin? There are plenty of Nickels on Dime Planchets, here are a few, but they look a bit more natural, with details near the rims not crisp.

If it's on a real silver dime planchet, depending on if you can read the date, they can go anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand.

I really can't tell from the pictures, it would need looked at in hand, and given much more in-depth testing to be sure.

  5. I agree it does look like a '64, but I am not an expert, and I can't be sure. I understand your concern with shape. The coin is slightly bigger 'around' than a dime..and the shape is a bit irregular. Also, it is nearly flat on one side and thicker on the other side. My thought was an off-strike, struck twice? It does rotate as it should.

Dr. James Wiles is an expert who verifies/attributes varieties w/o slabbing a coin. It costs $7.00 plus return shipping and ins. if you require it. Maybe someone here can post a link to his site? When in doubt this is a lot cheaper than using a third party grader just to have it come back as a possible dud.

The coin looks good to me. If the planchet is off set in the coining chamber (right up against the collar) the uneven spread of the planchet during the strike would not be unusual. I'd say odds are very ood that you have a 1964 nickel on silver dime planchet.

Nice! Keep us informed if you get an attribution. You struck a nerve with me though, I'm so upset that none of our pawn shops carry coins anymore. I used to frequent a dozen pawn shops once or twice a week. Since the new bullion coin law (1% or more PM content) is too onerous for dealers to comply, most stopped selling coins altogether. I miss the pawn shop experience, though I never scored as big as you with Jeffer/Dime planchet

There are no pawn shops within 50 miles of me. (MA.) The only time I can visit a couple is when I'm on vacation in N.H. Our bucolic area is overrun with city transplants on all the local boards and simply will not permit it. They won't even allow a annual fair. And like your screen name here, an owner has to have eagle eyes or places themselves in great jeapordy.. A small coin shop opened locally and lasted about a year. The state police hassled him out of business.

  14. Thanks Everybody! I will definitely be sending this to Dr. James Wiles. It is the first time I have felt the need to send off a coin to an expert to have my suspicions confirmed. Thanks for all the advice and information that you all have offerred!

I agree. And nice pick up plus great price. I would summit to be sure . That way you can keep it or flip it. I sold a nickel on penny last year MS 65 for $ 550.00

It would be interesting if you posted a poll after it returns to see who was right and who was not. Because the poll is anonymous, no one need feel put out. But please keep us up to date and post again once you know. Thanks!

I've e mailed James images before to get his take on a coin. He's very nice man and replies pretty quick too.

Both Mr. Wiles & Mr. Wexler are really decent guys.

I have little doubt that this is a genuine nickel struck on a silver dime planchet. As for James Wiles, he only attributes die varieties. He doesn't do errors.

There you have it - I just saw a few things that made me wonder, I'm sure Mike has looked at 1000x the number I have, and I completely trust his opinion.

    Congrats on a great error!
