Grade enhancements? Similar to CAC, but exclusively for modern US coins? MAC stickers?

E.g. NGC "MS67" Sacagawea - they would add a MAC sticker with a "PL" designation.

I understand their concept, and it seems to make sense for some types, but I'd like to hear other opinions...

Yes it was discussed a month or so ago. It's the return of Alan Hagar of accugrade fame.

I've never sent a coin to CAC, and I'm certainly not giving the time of day to this business either. If a coin gets a premium from me, it is because it looks better than average to me, and not because someone else's sticker says it looks better to them.

This is a joke. I bought a coin on Ebay that was labelled PL by NGC, and they had affixed a "DMPL" sticker to it (to be clear - I paid a PL price and got a PL coin, not a DMPL). Take a look at the list of their laughable "grade enhancements" - 90% FBL, 4 FS, etc. They are ridiculous - anyone that "submits" to them needs their head examined, and anyone who pays a premium for one of their coins is equally ridiculous.

Can't seem to get a handle on what these guys charge for their services. Seems you have to 'join'? I think grading moderns (and I've said it before) is to try and create conditional rarities of otherwise common coins. These guys seem to be hoping on the 'green bean' bandwagon in the so called 'modern sense'. To me it just seems like another way to separate a fool from his money.......

It's hard to take it seriously, they have something like 20 or 22 different annotations... and it's all 2nd tier stuff

90% red - which PCI was annotating 20 years ago and nobody else bought into it...
    4FS - when the standard is 5 or 5.5

    etc.

I can get sheets of dinosaur stickers at the dollar store - does that add any value to the slab?

I guess that's the idea. Are there only FS Jeffersons and those with no steps or are there also coins that are very close to 5FS? I don't think it makes much sense either, it reminds me of " she's a little bit pregnant" ;-)

OK, so can we add Pi Steps too (that is 3.1415926534 or more steps but less than 4)?

Seriously where does it begin and end? CAC divides into A/B/C (low/Solid/high) for the grade. 30 years ago, CompuGrade assigned MS63.3 (and was that MS63.26 rounded up?)

The more and finer you slice and dice things, looking for quantitative differences, the more rapidly you get to the point where every coin is unique and must be judged solely on it's own merits, since there will never be another coin that grades the same MS63 with exactly the same three but not those three attributes or six or whatever additional attributes...

Hey, maybe that's not bad. Wait - I have a catch-phrase: "Buy the slab not the coin!"

Oh, and we need a NEGATIVE sticker. The CAC puce bean - means it wasn't good enough for green or gold. The not5FS. More stickers...

Of course what will happen is that somebody will then create a slab that contains the slab plus space for all the stickers and then maybe a photo of the coin... oh, wait, that was done by ANACS and PCI and NCI and ANICS in the mid 80s...

The lunatics are now firmly in charge of the asylum.

my "FUN SHOW" NGC Marshals 50c error(the ones sold prematurely by the Mint in Dec 2014), had/has this sticker..my only comment would be, and, I'm a late bloomer(new to coins in 2007 at age 49), is from what little I know about coins and grading, I know enough to say I think the OLD way of grading a coin was best, that is, each side got a numeric grade..IMHO, when both sides were rounded out to make a number, it opened the window for mediocrity. Technically, the RIM should have a 3rd grade, if you want to get nick-picky about it). I've seen IKE dollars(and, everything else), with crappy obverse, and, incredible reverse(sometimes due to a die change)...

The sticker is a joke. I talked to the guy and he said that MAC stickered coins get 20% to 30% more then regular coins. Well, some CAC'ed coins dont get that much, so how could they? Furthermore, alot of people dont want to pay to see their price guide. So, how does one know what a coin is worth with the MAC sticker? And he said that it was free to join. Well, do I really want a company spamming me and selling my information to other companies? He said that the sticker meant that the coin was spotless. Well, coins tone in the slab. And NGC did this already and it didnt work. They used to have the W attribute. Alot of W coins had toning on them because it toned in the slab. Now NGC does not do the W anymore. Anybody who reholders their coin will lose their W. I honestly dont want a "MAC" stickered coin. I want to save the space for a CAC instead. But, this guy was pressing hard about the sticker. And I told him that I did not want the sticker there. He insisted. So, do I want to buy any of his coins? FK no.....I just dont want the sticker there. PERIOD. He doesnt get it, and I dont think he will ever get it. He said that he got like 20k hits on his website. WTF does that matter? I just dont want the sticker. And i dont know who this guy is. So, am I going to send my $500 dollar coin to him? FK no..I wouldnt even send my $100 dollar coin to him, let alone a $500 dollar coin. What if he swallows it? He does not understand that nobody trusts him. Hes a no name. What is a 90% FB? Either its a FB or not. And if its not, then its not....no need to argue over it. I say, just forget about buying his coins. I could find a spotless coin, without paying the extra 20% or 30% that hes asking.....

@Francis Dao , while reading your post, it sounded EXACTLY how I would be saying it....I felt I was reading my own thoughts. Needless to say, I agree with your opinion of MAC.

Do you really want to make us believe that you can sell coins with a significant premium over NGC list price just because there's a new sticker from an unknown company on the slab? Can you provide links to the auctions?

Looks like you can buy some proof like MS68 quarters from them for $1800... Or you could buy PF68 quarters somewhere else for probably $10.... Hmm...

Exactly. And when they received criticism on the PCGS forums, all of their listings were eBay BIN. Hmm... I wonder why.

I have no problem with the concept that a PL is rarer and more valuable than a proof of the same year. I do find $1800 for any state quarter to be ridiculous though, so in that regard, I agree.
