Here's a new acquisition, a variety in which the beaver looks more like a weasel.

Can you post a normal variety so I can see the difference?

A weasel is long and slender; a beaver is fat and round. It looks like a beaver to me.

It looks like the bare belly to me, though not the most dramatic example. On some of them the beaver's belly is completely gone due to over die polishing.

Normal nickel on the left, OP's nickel on the right.

Yep, that's definitely a barer belly than my example. There's a whole range of bellies, depending on how enthusiastic the die-polisher was.

What years do the "bare belly" run and is there a premium attached to them?

I only know of the 1990 Bare Belly, and they go for 5 to 10 times as much as the regular ones--not as much as a real rarity, except for the higher MS grades, which are insane as usual.

Just found a 5 cents 1934 "far S" (or "far rim"), the kind of minor variety we hypernerds just love (because it's not real expensive)....

The nickel I posted at the top of the thread was called a "#5" bare belly. I don't know whether that's more, or less, bare than #1 thru #4, but obviously there are at least 5 degrees of belly-bareness.:joyful:

Good post! Nice find. I'll call it a partial bare belly. :)

... or as the Hair Restoration commercials say: a "significant hair loss" belly.
