Just picked this up off E-Bay, do you think it will get a star designation from NGC? For some reason the color is tough to capture on this coin.
Yeah, the colors on the obverse are very vibrant, unlike those in the photo. But everytime I think a coin will star, it doesn't. Based on the responses in this thread, I am sure I can add this to group. Maybe I will get lucky and get a full step designation.
My only issue with the nickel to me Paul would be the hits on the obverse. Unfortunately they are mainly on his face, the prime focal area for the coin. The reverse is very nice, but most collectors concentrate on the obverse more.
I really like the look of that one. I voted yes in the poll, but honestly I'm not sure. I don't think the color alone is enough for a * but if the luster and surfaces are really nice in hand I'd say it has a shot. You never know what the graders will think. I have a war nickel in MS64 that is 100% covered in vibrant rainbow colors that doesn't have a * and I can't figure out why. I'll post pics of it when I get home.
I don't see it getting FS due to the gash under pillar 3 on the bottom steps, but as with all of your nickels, Paul, I like it
The problem here is not the coin, it is my photography. The color on this coin simply hides from my normal setup. But as I recently discovered, my iPhone6 has the ability to take pretty good photos from any angle. For all those that said no to the star, does anyone want to change their vote?
I like to color, I like the surfaces, I like the strike, the only question I have is the spot on the collar below his ear that shows up on the new photo. A small nick or is it a carbon spot? I think you will get the star but I am no expert on what TPG's do or don't do. Good Luck!
IMO, that is a much better picture than in the OP and nearly every other picture of yours I have seen. It is close, but I am still on the no side. That being said, I have always bowed to you expertise in this area.
No, just a plain old MS64. That new pic makes the coin look way better. I would say definitely worthy of a star. Do you have a shot of the reverse?
I voted "NO" from the first set of pics -- if the 2nd are closer to its real look, then I'd vote "maybe". I have never seen a coin that's a "sure lock" for a star at NGC. Their assignment of that designation seems to be inconsistent -- by that I mean, I think most coins that get the star deserve it, but there are a lot of coins that look just as good that don't get it. That's also been my personal experience with the PL and DPL designations on non-Morgans at NGC -- coins that get the PL or DPL deserve it, but there are many that are just as proof-like that don't make their cut for some reason on a particular grading day. And, I also have some experience with coins that were PL, cracked, and then came back without PL -- and vice versa.
I like the surfaces on this one I feel if it had more color or deeper color you'd get the star as is I dont think so.
