Bought this one on eBay over the weekend and it arrived today. I'm having trouble making up my mind on the toning.

I like it. Surfaces seem to be original, although I think is see wear on the high point, but it seems natural toning to me.

I agree. I think it is an AU coin.

I think it is mint state. I see only an absence of toning on the high points, but no discernible wear. You should definitely grade this coin (NGC).

It also looks like a reverse die clash not real strong, but still a clashed die.

Natural toning look like an album toned coin does appear an au-58 to me but I'm no expert on strike vs wear on modern coins

I think the toning is natural and I agree that I think you should have it graded by NGC. It probably isn't going to get a premium gem grade, but I can't see how it wouldn't get a star designation. That coin in an MS65* would probably be worth more than your purchase price and grading fees. I think that coin is awesome and I would have been proud to have it in my registry collection when I collected toned Roosevelt Dimes.

Natural toning I believe and also I agree with the AU-58 grade. You can see on the reverse what looks like the very slightest bit of wear on the top of the torch.

58 (trace of wear on hair above ear, top of torch in middle, and flame), natural toning. Looks nice!

Thanks for all the input, everyone. To me, the toning pattern looked natural but I usually only see patterns like this on coins from 57+58 mint sets. Seeing it on a coin from 46 had me worried it may have been doctored.

Do they give star designations for the AU58 grade?

I'm not sure. I couldn't find anything on their website about it. And a quick search on eBay for AU star coins only turned up a few ancients graded AU*

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Yes, they give the Star throughout all of the circulated grades. I personally own a couple of EF Bust Halves with stars.

That's good news. I think I will be submitting this sometime with a couple other coins. I'll make a thread for the submission when I do.

Based on that photo, I have a problem with the market acceptability of that toning, despite the fact that it resides in NGC plastic. What does the reverse look like? Is there toning correspondence with the obverse?
