Hi everybody. First post but I've been lurking around for years and learning a bunch. I recently came across this 1975 Ike in a proof set and was wondering if anybody has any knowledge of this variety. Some variety of hub doubling?
MD(Master Die Doubling)..while an impressive set of notching(probably THE strongest for MD in the series), and, LOOKS viable, Wiles lists these as 1976-S MD-4-O-II-C., which is a "MASTER DIE DOUBLE DIE" issue(common)anybody interested in Ike Varieties needs a copy of his outstanding book "CONECA Attribution Guide to Eisenhower Dollar Die Varieties", James Wiles, Ph.D., 1997, CONECA(out of print)..the main known features are discussed in depth, and, gives the reader a simplified handle on the differences between TRUE Hub Doubling, and Master Die Doubling, Series Doubling, and more.
Looks like notching to me, but I would wait for the others that are the experts because for all I know proofs may actually be that way. 1975 Bicentennial proof, cool. I guess from what I have read there is type 1 and type 2.
It is definitely a doubled die. I don't collect Ike's so I'm not sure which one it is. I know that there was a lot of master die doubling with the Eisenhower series. Hopefully Larry or one of the Ike experts will see this and be able to better tell you which DDO you have.

Thanks for the info guys. I think you nailed it, sensehunter. I'll definitely need to find a copy of that book.
Yes, and, congrats on GREAT PICS, and, a super eye for detail..you'll do very well with spotting varieties..join the IKEGROUP.INFO club, TON's of material, and IKE forum there.
Thanks everybody. I've got a stack of stuff that I had to put aside in hopes of coming across someone with some expertise. Hope nobody minds if I post a couple every once in a while
Post away! We all learn something, and, you may have a new discovery in the piles. I just got written up on Numismatic News for a discovery 1953-S Roosevelt 10c, with Double Die Obverse, nicknamed "Hotlips", after the Morgan Dollar Variety..it's all about the hunt for me! http://media2.fwpublications.com.s3...ess_20150210e.pdf?et_mid=719769&rid=238138629
While nice for those who simply do not know, it is also a quite common find Chris. I just pulled out a Silver BiCentennial 3 coin set which has the exact same doubling. The trick is in finding this "Master Doubling" doubled.
Lee, I take it that this is similar to the 1972 Lincoln cent MDO, in that roughly half show the master doubling. Is this correct? Also, does it show up on the clad coins? I have a few I'll check if it does.
Geez! The one time I try to be nice to someone just because I get people like Paddy ragging on me for being nasty to newbies, and you go and shoot me down. I can't win! Chris
Cool coin! Nice find I appreciate the encouragement Chris. Common is right, though. 3 out of the...3 proof sets I bought had this exact doubling. I've noticed some of my clad proof bicentennial quarters and halves have similar doubling on the dates. Same thing going on there?
The same thing is true for some of the Kennedy varieties, but it's still nice to find them. Many years ago, when I went through my SMS sets, I found a few Kennedys with a common DDO. Since JT Stanton is one of the co-authors of the CPG, I had the opportunity to make them a little unique by having the inserts autographed by him. Now, they're even more special to me. Chris
Those are nice. That's a cool idea Since we are on the topic of DD's here is on of my favorites. I found two of these in one day and I sent one to a good friend and kept this one.
