Hey friends, forgive me if somebody already brought up this issue but I didn't see it and I find it refreshing that the US Mint is going to mint some coins that aren't the brain child of our zany Congress. Looks like this is just an idea brought up by Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC). What do you think, will the idea ever come to fruition? Dime, quarter, half dollar, which coin do you think the Mint will go with, if any? http://www.coinnews.net/2015/02/06/us-mint-2016-24k-gold-coins-to-celebrate-1916-designs/
I like it, and if they will stay true to the original designs, the total weight would be just slightly higher than an ounce of gold. With the price of gold, the three coin set wouldn't be too bad. Really though, if the want to stay true to the designs, just make them out of silver, make business strike and matte proof versions. And not in crazy limited numbers either.
Agreed! I'd really like to get a silver one. I'm thinking they will probably agree to a dual date, 1916-2016 on each coin. We'll see, and you're right, not in crazy mintage numbers either.
I think they will do it. Modern collectors will love them. Most classic collectors will ask why. Me, I'd rather pool all that money together and buy a very nice '17 Type 1 SLQ. ** What would be the apx. cost of the gold 3 pc set, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, $1500?
Gold or silver to appeal to budgets or people with more to spend. Original design on original size planchets. That is my vote
silver only. if they were to make the coins out of gold and offer them either in sets or individually i feell that people, the ordinary working man, wouldn,t be able to afford the set and creating fractional gold is redundant of the american eagl e series. I could see a modified die(s) being offered under the commemorative line of numismatics. but what do i know im only 25!!!!!lol
I'll buy both the gold coin issue and silver medal set if they go ahead and produce them. I would also be interested in a platinum set if they issued one. Although It's a shame they can't make the silver version actual coins though without congressional legislation approving it but the medals will probably very similar just lacking the denomination. I also think that it would be nice for the mint to offer them separately also that way everyone could hopefully afford to buy the one(s) they like best. Although who knows what sort of disaster the actual release will be with the mint selling them all to flippers or dealers at whatever show they get released at initially.
I'd buy a silver set, but I'd like it if they also produced a circulating clad group so people could see how much the old designs looked; IMO better than those most people have seen their whole lives. As long as we're wishing, I wish they'd get rid of the dead presidents on our coins and currency and return to American allegories on everything. What we have now is boring. I'm a strong believer in changing things every other decade; as it stands our last change in circulating coinage was JFK half and that was 50 years ago.
just another money making plot to benefit high end collectors, flippers an dealers, these will be unobtainable for a majority of collectors and YNs....
You could probably buy MS examples of the original silver coins specified for less than the dreck the Mint will make if in silver.
Small dollars aren't circulating; at least don't circulate very much around here. Down here we have to make a special effort to get them, as most banks don't regularly carry them. Whenever the bank has some, they're usually sitting on top of the cashier's counter since they have no spot in the drawers to keep them. When I see them I usually buy them to spend ... and some places around town won't even take them, often looking at you like you tried to pass some of that "funny money" ... LOL
I like the idea. as long as they don't screw it up. those are 3 of my favorite coins. the idea worked for the Kennedy half.
Not the original designs, though. I wonder what they would make for the mercury, since I am not exactly sure which was the "original" design by the artist.
