1880 Indian Head Variety?

  1. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg This is my first post on this site. I frequently view postings on here, so I figured it was time I joined. I just recieved this 1880 Indian head, and I am looking for any input as to what's going on with it. I've been into coins for years, but just bought a cherry pickers guide, and thought this may be a snow-1. It came in today and I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on here. The obverse has major longacre doubling, some doubling on liberty, clash marks and a few gouges and cuds? The reverse has what looks like corrosion, especially where the reverse clash should be. There is a few raised bumps in the general proximity of the famous clash, and some major recutting on most of the design. Is it possible this was a late die state? Rusty dies? I'm just clueless here. I can get better pictures of specific spots if you need. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Any help would be great. Thanks. Mike

The die state looks unspectacular, very average, maybe midstate, Mike. Whenever you blow these things up they always look like they're deteriorated somewhat. You've got something going on, could be some clashing. Here's a link you want to keep handy; see if you can find anything: http://www.fly-inclub.org/mainvarlist.html.

  8. image.jpg I'm thinking snow-3 broken 2 and 8. Anyone have the attribution guide? I can't find a picture, only title.

It looks to be the Snow S3b, Broken 2nd 8.

  10. That's what I was thinking. Any idea on value? I just took better pictures. Here's the 1880 and an 1898 that came in today. The 1898 has a repunched 1. image.jpg

That could explain why it looks like it's falling.
