I think the bust is clearly Celtic - a type imitating Phillip II or Alexander? What do y'all think? AE16 but I don't know the weight. I see similar bust types among the Pannonian issues, and the Pannonians imitated the stater types of Macedon so... This is the seller's pic and there isn't much I can do with it. I'll post my own when it's in hand. If anyone could point me to the right tribe I'd appreciate it!
Very nice coin. I think it is a Philip II imitation as well. I don't know much about Celtic coins at all, hardly.
It seems the Celts preferred to mint silver coins - there is no end of imitative staters, but the bronze seems very scarce, if not rare.
i would just guess it was a greek coin of philip ii. what's the give away that it's something else? the horse missing the rider?
Ummm, hey JA ... errrr yah, Bing always likes it when he's correct, so I think that you should definitely make a bigger deal out of it ... I'm just sayin' ... just jokes, B-Bro
The head on the OP coin is laterally elongated with a nose that forms a basically straight line with the forehead. And there's no neck to speak of. The originals have very different busts - "High Greek" and more realistic in style. Here's a typical example of the Macedonian version... And I suspect the Celtic coin is smaller and lighter, but I'll have to wait and see on that. I do agree with Bing that it's probably Spanish. Still looking through all the pages on Wildwinds...
a) it's Friday night, so yah, I have no idea what I'm talkin' about ... b) I have this unknown Celtic coin (oh, but not that Philip above example) .... anyway, I'll try to remember to find it "tomorrow" ... ummm, you know that I like you guys, right?
With the rough surfaces obscuring most of the details, I agree with chrsmat that it might be a Phillip II bronze. I've seen these with the rider engraved so lightly into the die that on a lower grade or corroded specimen, he's hard to see.
i was shopping a bit anyway,so snooped around some. do you think its this one? http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/anc...horse_prancing_rstar_under/13870/Default.aspx
Maybe, yes, but the rider isn't what counts in my opinion. The bust just doesn't seem Macedonian at all to me.
Hey man, good eye! That's the closest match I've seen so far. So not Celtic, Alexander III. Well, I thought I might have cherrypicked a Celtic coin, but evidently not. No worries though, Alex is cool too.
