This is my first heavily circulated Morgan so I do not know what they are supposed to look like. Does it look OK?
I like the looks of it. Agree with Tom B. about the rim dent. I know it's a heavily worn coin, but you still should only hold it by the rim.
Even so, you still left oils from your finger on the coin. This could eventually show up on the coin. The surfaces look great, but the rim bump is unattractive. I actually really like the overall look of the coin though.
I paid $30 for it on Ebay. I am happy with it, I wanted it because it is a first year issue if New Orleans after the Civil War. Also, it was my first morgan from the 1870's (I have an 1880 though lol) Anyways, thanks.
And in collecting if you are happy with it then that's all that matters. Not a bad coin for being circulated - just imagine the history of that coin as it journeyed through the years into your hand!!
That is what I am thinking, I think that I like a heavily circulated Morgan better than an uncirculated one in terms of the history connected to it. The circulated ones had an adventure, most uncirculated ones stayed in mint bags never to see the light of day for 80 years.
I agree. 99% of what I collect is in the F-VF range. Not because of price, but because they are more attractive to me visually and from a historical standpoint.
Yeah, it is a decent circulated coin. Unfortunately, that massive rim damage kind of spoils it. It is clearly original, and not collectible for value, but just for being a nice coin to have.
Surprised there isn't some evidence of it on the reverse. It's a pretty good hit but it must have been a glancing blow?
