Getting boxes of coins from the banks.

Sharing my experience with you and a bit of advice. I see a lot of people finding it hard to acquire full boxes from their banks. I made a promise to my bank manager that works both ways. Try ordering a box with the proviso that you will not bring in scads of coins all at once for return. I did and it works for me. Nothing is more time consuming and irritating than to have someone bring in a hundred rolls of coins for returns all at once. The bank must store them until they can get rid of them. They are heavy, bulky and must be accounted for on paperwork. So be kind to your bank and feed them back slowly and methodically, it just might work to your advantage. And it also helps to have even a small account there to help out.

    I concur.
    Don't *poo* where you eat.
My bank is more than willing to order boxes of coins for me and I have promised not to bring all my dumps back to them. That way they don't get stuck with the coins that they have ordered for me and I have searched and I don't dump back into my supply.

Ditto. Dump them at a different branch, or better yet, a completely different bank.

I have 2 different accounts at 2 different banks for just that reason :)

I agree. And, don't forget to treat both sets of tellers. I took my "drop" bank a box of donut holes today and you'd of thought I'd brought them a 5 course steak dinner. A little sugar works!

I see youtube videos of people ordering $500 Half Dollar Boxes and only finding 2 or 3 40% silver halves and maybe 1 1964 somewhere in the middle of all the junk.

I know a few here locally who do the same and are considering quitting silver hunting because it's too time consuming. Also many banks don't seem to carry many coins to begin with. I have an account with US Bank, every time I walk in to either of my 2 branches we have here, the only rolled up coins they have are pennies, nickels, dimes, and the almost worthless new presidential $1 "gold" coins.

Years ago, I heard people had better luck with such things, like finding dozens of 40% halves and some 64's. It's a bit late for that now, since many coin collectors have done this for a long time.

There's probably still some money in penny hunting or nickel hunting if I invested time in that, but the quarters and halves extremely rarely if ever end up being worth the time.

Navy Federal Credit union has a machine to deposit coins. You type in your account number and put the coins in. The money is deposited in your account. I am starting to get hooked in roll searching. I find it best to buy from another branch.

I agree with your sentiment, Tommyc. It's best to work with your local bank manager and find a mutually agreeable arrangement.
I've worked out an arrangement with my bank where I purchase a box of halves and two boxes of dimes per week. They've generously agreed to take back my coin and order new boxes for me each week with provision that I don't order too much. As a show of appreciation, I bring in donuts, cookies or candy bars once a month.
I've witnessed first-hand what happens to inconsiderate roll-hunters: eventually the banks don't want to deal with them, and word travels fast to other branches and even competing institutions.
In the case I observed, another coin roll hunter was ordering 15 boxes of halves per week from a couple of local banks. The tellers didn't want to deal with him, the armored truck drivers were getting irritated, and eventually the banks refused to let him dump his coin.
It's best to not be that guy.

My wife has a business account so the bank I go to is fairly helpful. I sometimes walk in and buy 5 or ten rolls. Whatever they have in the drawer. I had them order a box once and then the next time I came in the teller asked if they should just order me a box every month. So now I get that but I still walk in and get what's in the drawer some days.
    I always dump at Coinstar..

This is what turned me off of CRH-ing. I couldn't afford 11% being taken every week for simply enjoying going through change.

My wife uses a credit union and they have a coin dump, so I may use that when I get started again. I usually search nickels though. Pulling pre 60s, silvers, and proofs.

I have a bank that calls me if any odd coins come in and they know me as the coin guy I don't even have an account there and they order me boxes all the time, my dump bank treated me very bad one day I asked them for a box of pennies and refused to give me any more boxes or order me anything so from that day on they became my 1 and only dump bank. Everytime the management sees me come in they cringe and bring someone over to the coin counter to get ready to start changing bags. But I never treat the employees bad.

If I get an Amazon card or a iTunes card I get 100% back at coinstar. My teenager appreciates the iTunes.

Ate lunch today, next door to a bank. Afterwards a bunch of us guys were standing outside shooting the bull and I couldn't stand it. I went inside and asked the teller if she had any halves or SBAs in her drawer that she would sell. She said that she didn't have any in her drawer but there was $600 worth of SBAs in their vault that had been there for as long as she had been and if I wanted them she would get someone to get them. I only had $400 bucks on me so went outside and got $200 from a coworker.

Went back in and she had them in a box setting on the counter. I was all excited until she asked me for an account number. She said their policy wouldn't allow her to do it. I didn't have time to open an account or would have. What a let down. Been bothering me all afternoon.

Here is what I do, when I get a bunch of coins from one of my banks or credit unions, I spend those coins, who knows but that waitress who gets a couple dollars of halves as a tip might give them to a child. Now if enough coin roll hunters started doing this, the average non coin collector might get the idea that those half dollars are meant to be spent and some goodies might start circulating, or they might want to see if they are worth something and start looking into coin collecting.

Just getting coins, looking for sil ver and then "dumping them" makes it so the mint does not have to make half dollars for circulation, so collectors have to pay the premium for mint or proof sets.

I bring the girls at my order bank a few oz's of there favorite weed!!! No No that's not it , I bring them there favorite brand of Dun kin Doughnuts Coffee, LOL Even though a doobie would probably get me farther at this bank ha Ha. And so far no troubles, Just the other day I offered the lady at the dump bank rolls of some of the first issue presidential coins mint sealed. Because I know her son collects also, She said thanks but that's more than she could spend I did not want to dump them but needed the cash for a bill. they cringe every time I come in loaded with coffee cans full of coins because ts right by the tellers and its noisy as heck putting $1000 dollars of half's into the coin star, And I put them in slow as I possible can so it reads them all.

At that point I would have asked to speak to the manager. There really was no reason not to unload these coins to anyone, account or not. That was just a pissy thing to do. I'd go back.

I have a sealed box of 2009 Lincoln Cabins in my closet, cost $25. Had 4 boxes, sold 2, searched 1 and kept 1 unopened. The highest grade I got from PCGS was a 66.

I didn't used to give it a thought but now I save all the 2009's. I have about 10 presidential one's that look like ddo's. Then hair is thicker, liberty letters are thicker, the 2 in the date has a bulge to the East. They definitely look different than the others, no bulge on the 2, thinner hair etc. I sent a couple to Mr. Wexler and he said no they are normal. I am saving them anyway. They are definitely different dies. I need to do more research. They look like the Coppercoins ddo-001 which is I believe is the same as the wddo-001 but there is no die scratch above the eye. Oh well I'll just keep saving them.

  21. Ok--so just came across this forum and have to admit--I m totally clueless with buying coins from banks. never even thought of it. So if you could pardon some really dumb questions on my part:

1). What type of coins do they have at banks?
2). Are these uncirculated coins for the most part or circulated?
3). When you say boxes of coins--what quantity are you talking about?
    Lastly what are SBA's?
4). Are there any specific coins types that are better than others? Quarters, half dollars, etc
