So a few weeks back I posted a thread on a 1970s small date... False alarm... Tonight... First one I pick up large date... Second... Small date woohoo! Pics.. What do you guys think?
I'm not sure it is small date, it looks like large date, the "0" looks like it is higher than the 7. Some photos make it look more small date than others though. Some photos make it look very small date though, some otherwise. The Machine Doubling makes it hard to tell. Large Date on top, Small Date on Bottom
either way... I have 2 different coins lol the S mintmark on the left first in the pics is DEF further away lower than the right... so one of them is a small date... which one?
If any are a small date the one on the left on your first photos is. The machine doubling makes it harder for me to tell but it looks like it may be different than the other.
It is definitely different from the other... we are talking grand canyon difference. Those that are saying both are large... can you explain this because one of those S marks is clearly in a way different spot than the other.
I think even in the 70s the mint marks were punched by hand into the dies so the mint marks could be all over the place. The S being in two different places relative to the date on two different coins doesn't mean it's a small or large date, they're just struck with a different dies. If you follow the diagnostics that coinman123 posted both coins are large date.
This is a post I made while ago when I found a 1952 D wheat with the mint mark really close to the date compared to all the others I had. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1952-d-lwc-mint-mark-seems-really-high.248906/
the mintmark is irrelevant on small or large date 1970 S cents, it was punched into the die after it was created with the date, the second clue to identify small dates is the word "LIBERTY", yours are both strong strikes compared to small date cents which are weak strikes.... http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
Booo... lol. well hopefully 3rd time will be a charm... got my hopes up. Wont make that mistake again.
Often we see what we want to see. Often, I put aside such coins then come back to them a few days later. I usually end up wondering what I thought I saw, and pitch them back into circulation.
I've got a box that says Second Look on it. If I see something interesting it goes in there till I have time to research it. It has 6 coins in it now from a month of searching. With small grandkids around I have to keep my stuff put up, so when I get all my coins to search out, I hate to spend alot of time one one thing and then put all that stuff back up. When I only have an hour or 2 to kill I go to the Second Look box.
