I have this 1914 S $10 Indian half eagle. I can't grade gold very good. What do you think this would grade, and do you think it would be worth submitting? Are the pics ok?

Help me understand what you see on the reverse for the cleaning. I don't know what to look for on gold like I do silver.

The luster on the obverse is in keeping with a high end AU or a lower end UNC. While there are some luster breaks, they look like normal grazes.

In contrast to that, the luster appears impaired on the reverse, mostly parallel with a line drawn from 5:00 to 11:00, and predominantly in the fields.

I'm not sure it is cleaned, probably an AU-58. I see wear on high points such as the eagles breast/wing area and the wear near liberty's cheek. Like you, I'm not good at gold. Very nice coin.

Au 58 there is a portion of reverse I'm not sure about from pics so possible cleaning details have to see in hand

Harshly cleaned gold can sometimes be the most difficult to identify even in hand let alone from pictures. But I'll readily agree that the luster is mostly gone on this one, particularly in the fields. And given the amount of wear that this coin has, or rather does not have, the logical explanation for that much luster to be missing would be a harsh cleaning.

I would say XF45 because of the distracting marks on the cheek, if it doesn't get a details grade. I don't think it's worth grading unless you just want it verified as authentic. There's not much upside potential for it versus keeping it raw. Still pretty and feels good in your hand.

I'd recommend sending it in for authentication, at least. There are a few things about this coin that concern me.
    - tiny "pimples" on the eagles neck; some small "spikes" near the rims and date, some depressions in the fields that don't exactly look like bagmarks to me. In places the rim almost looks crumbly. I'm not saying it's fake, I'm just... concerned.

I have several others I would like to send in to get authenticated, so maybe I will throw this one in too.

It will be a great refresher on gold grading for me also. If real I'd say 55 too.

Because it is a better date, I would try your best to get it to straight grade. I have had no grade gold coins but put them near sun exposure in the house and you might get the tiny layer to get it to be acceptable to grading services in a few months. People never let their coins breathe. I have had some coins as have others who did not think the coins would grade well. But shazam! You guessed it, they got into MS holders!

    Okay, I thought 58 obv, 60 rev.

    But, others disagree.

That said, the raised mark on the D of DOLLARS bothers me.

    Could be ?'able.

I didn't notice that. Maybe took a hit like the N next to it...?
