Today my cherry picking was spot on.... found these two 1869 Shield Nickels . Both are RPD and both different. So they were a had to have........ both coins are raw.
Both nice coins! Great RPD on the first, but I think the second is strike doubling. The secondary date image looks smashed. Also, you see the same doubling in the left side of the ball and left "pincer" (not sure what official Shield Nickel lingo is for that).
I was thinking it's a triple date also! That's why I purchased both ...... best part they were under a $100 for both!
In 1869 there were two different dates the 1869 Normal date known before as the tall date is very scarce. The wide date variety is better known. Looking at the first specimen it shows signs of being the FS-05-1869-1306 I believe it to be an RPD normal/tall date over punched with the wide date variety . This date is also tripled punched at least maybe quad. Again if you like varieties the shield nickel always deliver's.
I believe that the 6 was a 6,9,6 strike if you look carefully to me it looks that a 6 was over struck with a 9 then again with a 6. That number has been struck 3 times. No matter what I'm very pleased with my find. Hunting varieties like these is so much fun. One never knows what one will find. One thing I have found is most dealers are not up on variety coins. Not saying all just most I run into, as I stand over their cases and go oh look.....
Alan at the Westminster show Sunday.Nice show a few new faces. . I'm loving pickin these shields.....
