    Hi All,
My son and I just got a 1980 P SBA and its not clad. Like I said in the tile it weighs 7.34 g. Has anyone seen or know about this?

It would help to have photos.

Also, you might want to check the accuracy of your scale just to be sure.

Thanks for getting back. I checked the scale and its right on. I checked it with a known SBA and it was spot on. This coin is very strange. I up loaded picks of it.

Looks like it was beaten, badly !

Yeah, I'm going with "physical and chemical abuse". Corroded down to the observed weight, and beaten to death as well.

She may be beaten down, but does that explain the lack of copper on the edge?

I'd have to see a non-blurry image of the edge. Is there a groove down its center?

It's quite possibly a counterfeit. Many counterfeit SBA and Sac dollars were produced, with most coming from Central and South American countries.

We really do need better close-ups of both sides and the edge. These photos do not support your claim that they are missing a clad layer.

Here are a couple of edge photo's. Its the best my I-phone can take. I hope it helps. There is no groove but it does have the ridges like a normal one but its also worn in places.

Sorry, the cellphone photos just don't help at all. I'm not trying to be a smart arse, but if you want to collect errors and varieties, you need a better camera, related equipment and photo software.

Sorry Chris. Cell phone images are plenty adequate, if you take the time to take good images, and have a macro adapter. First image is resting on a tripod & second is with the macro adapter. Both with an iPhone.

That's fine Chris. You reminded me that I should have been using our microscope to take the pics. We are new to this type of find. Here are some better pics.

You're right! I should have been more specific. Yes, I've seen other phone cameras capable of taking better pics, but additional equipment is still necessary.

Okay, these photos appear totally different from the first group. These appear to have a copper color, but the first set looked silverish. So, in terms of color, which are more accurate?

I'm satisfied that this is a counterfeit SBA dollar intended to circulate.

...and not just throwing the phone up and snapping. Good images take effort!

Mike, that was my initial thought, but did you also look at the last set of photos?

These are not Chinese counterfeits. They're Latin American. I don't have a photo, but I've handled several and they were extensively reported on in Coin World several years ago.
