Below are photos presented to the Mint Director for a new Gold & Silver $75.00 Face Coin. How about some chatter on this. My choice would be an Eagle design but this would certainly be a first for African Americans on a gold piece. What say you? 1 lady liberty 2.jpg 1 lady liberty 2.jpg

I like the right Liberty with the left eagle.
I'd totally buy that...Not that I could ever afford a gold coin :(

I'm partial to the left hand eagle, sure is going to be pretty in high relief.

Anyway, I don't mind the chosen Liberty with torch and flag design, but she's posed as if saying, "Can you hold this torch for a second?" I liked the "coming at you" with sword and flag design better. The eagle isn't bad, but they really have to use the negative space wisely so it doesn't look like it's floating in space. All the fine print should be moved to the edge and the remaining text hand-drawn, not computer-rendered.

I really like the concept, but would prefer it on a coin more such as a one ounce silver round, Maybe the concept could be images of Liberty, and could be a yearly contest for sculptors to inspire interest in sculpting.

This has already been discussed, and the "panel" has already officially picked the left eagle, and right liberty.

I think these artists' hand-drawn depictions are pretty much useless—all of the shading and more intricate details are going to be completely lost on the actual coin (even on a metal as soft as gold). The designs would turn out better if they had actual engravers working on clay or plaster first, rather than taking pencil-and-paper drawings and trying to convert them to metal engravings.

A 3/4 Union? Why not a full Union ($100)? I do like beautiful birds and the eagles are all nicely drawn.

We need "Liberty [Parent of Science and Industry]" and "In God We Trust" not "E Pluribus Unum" twice. Let's be bold and write out the value as "One Union" on the rim if it could be made as a $100 gold coin, a strong political and monetary statement all in one.

Has there been much discussion on why they selected that specific lady liberty? Forgive me for dipping into the political realm, but this seems conveniently timed and I otherwise don't understand the choice.

I apologize, I did not know another thread had been started on this. Did not mean to overlap.

I think the denomination is a farce, like something the Canadians would do. Or could it be the whole point of making it a $75 coin (instead of the usual $50 for a one Troy ounce coin) is to convince everyone that there is inflation, even as prices crash in a deflationary spiral all around us?

I guess we won't know until we hear what the price point is. But I have to hand it to the Canadians for their marketing efforts. With everything they make
there must be buyers for all that stuff. I also heard a rumor that the Mint is already planning it's next 50 quarter program. Chatter about America's 50 most famous automobiles.

I agree. I'm not a fan of the $75 denomination. Using the $75 denomination is just an excuse to mint something to sell to collectors as a profit maker for the GAO. I guess that's good, but it doesn't justify the existence as currency needs. I like some of the designs, though I always dislike the two dimensional cartoon-ish renderings of what will become three dimensional struck coins. I think they should never choose a coin design before they see full dimensional examples of the finished design, the way old coins were prepared in bass relief sculpted plaster. What with the available technology of 3-D printing now, they should be able to define the proposed designs, before officially selecting the designs, and judge according to dimensional maquettes as does almost every other industy, particularly industrial design.

Similar ideas a few years ago were proposed for creating the $25 palladium eagle coins, but those never came to be.

I'm all for that...as long as there are 1966 & 1970 Chevelle SS coins, and the love of my life, a 1993 Mustang 5.0, I'm collecting baby!!!

Ok, in the OP, he said a "gold and silver" coin. Is this a bi-metal coin, with a ring of silver around the gold? And why would it be $75 if it is just one ounce of gold, I thought one ounce in modern times was $50, and oldy days was $20face/oz?

I think the designs are cool, just not for coins. They look suitable for paintings, not coins. BUT, that design of Liberty with the sword and flag, WOW, that just became my phones background. I would buy that if it was copper. Chiefbullsit, you just up-ticked a few points for posting that.

I walked by the US Mint booth today at the Long Beach Coin Show and noticed they had a March of Dimes Set on display. Which includes a Reverse proof Roosevelt Dime. It might be old news, but i found it kind of interesting (the dime). Not sure when they will be releasing it. Staff said I could take some quick pics with camera phone.

    poor shots with camera phone.
