I started with the 17S & 18S from my grandmother when I was 12, I just turned 60 last month. Many I picked up in trades through ads in Numismatic News over the years for bulk U.S. & foreign stamps I had been accumulating from a friend in Ohio who I traded cents off coupons to and I have been picking up the B.U. upgrades over the past five years from Tom Waggoner in Shawnee Mission, Ks. (A dealer who I've grown fond of). So the major cost/investment is from Tom and the rest cost next to nothing, just my time. The 21 PDS also came from Tom.
Great job on the collection. Walkers are such beautiful coins even in Good. I have a couple nice early Walkers I've rescued from junk bins and pawn shops. My best find was a complete 16-36 PDS set from a local inner city pawn shop. all coins were AG-VG but it was only $499, which was a great price. I sold it 24 hrs later to my favorite LCS and walked away with about $740. I had a ~G-6 21-D for which I got $230. I even kept the 18-D because it was a nice Fine as a bonus.
Congrats on finishing the collection! Any plans for upgrades? Where are you heading next as a collector?
There are still B.U. that I can afford to upgrade to and strict fines in the harder dates in this collection. My next step is to start upgrades on my buffalo nickels and save for a BU 1928 Peace Dollar to finish that collection.
That is great and would be one tough set to complete. I have never gone after the Walkers. Sounds like you have sentimental reasons to chase this series. Like the part where you mention your grandmother. When I was a kid my grandmother would always give me Morgan's she would get while working at a department store. One is a 1896, the year she was born. It's in my intercept album. It would be easy to upgrade it, but its the year she was born and was a gift from her so its staying.
You are probably right about my grandmother, she was a beautiful person and I truly miss her. She passed in 1985. If not for her I might not have ever started coin collecting. But when I was young I was a bookworm and loved history and also studied the two World Wars & Civil War. The WL's spanned both Word Wars so I dived right into them. Besides, I also think these are one of, if not the most, beautiful coins ever made.
