Where do they come from?

    I have this IHC and I'm wondering where the marks come from. I know in the photos they look gray but they are actually black. I'm sure the cent has been cleaned, could it be a side effect from that?

    Corrosion from some sort of hostile environment (a sneeze?) or chemicals left behind from a cleaning.

    Is there any way to get it off? Will it continue to eat away at the coin? Or is it a one time deal?

    Do you really think that it is counterfeit?
