Got this in the mail today when I came home but it looks like it's an over strike, or maybe double struck?
It's a nice coin, AE2? I don't see anything that suggests an overstrike or a double strike - to what are you referring?
It's and AE2. Look at letters "TAN" of the Obv. It looks like there are letters behind those, smaller ones. With out cleaning it, that's all I see though. Not sure what they are, maybe just a sloppy die cutter
I see what looks like a double "T", so perhaps you are correct or it could be a double hammer strike?
I've had similar experiences: looking through dealer inventories and I say, "Man, that coin looks familiar..." Found a couple die matches that way, but I was never compelled enough to buy them just for the sake of the matches.
that's the first thing i noticed...what is that? i thought it was an understrike part, but then not sure. my next thought was barding...but accoriding wikipeida, that didn't come in to the middle ages. i have seen animals with a caparison (cloth covering) on older coins, could it be that? very interesting coin at any rate RG.
What you've got there are "Christmas Balls" as Doug Smith likes to call them, a decoration unique to the Arles mint. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/fh.html Scroll down to the Arles coin.
