Which Seated Dollar would you choose and why?

There's about $100 difference in price but both graded "about" the same. Would you pay more for an 1873? There were only 293,000 minted that year, as opposed to over a million in both 1871 and 1872.

I like the look of the 1873 a lot better, but I don't know whether I'm just reacting to an unflattering photo of the 1871.

If I had to pick from the two, I would go with the 1871 only because I like the surfaces more.

But if you plan on selling it over time, the scarcer 1873 may do better.

    I prefer the 73

Definitely the 1873. It has a much more original look to it and the small rim ding at ~11:30 on the obverse doesn't bother me at all.

I like the 1873 better, that's just my gut reaction. I like to see all the gunk pushed up against the devices, giving it some nice contrast. Also, looks to be some subtle, but nice color on the 1873.

The 1873 has a better characteristic look to it.

What's your price point? You can get some VF 1840s examples for about $500. Much lower mintages.

The 1840s are "no motto". If he's seeking a type piece as stated in his sig they wouldn't work.

As for the 2 above my preference would be the 1871.

I must have missed the part that this was for a type set.

Yes, I'm looking for one with a motto. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

    Looking to spend $400-$500.

FWIW, the 1871 is graded by NGC (~$400); the 1873 is raw (~$500).

I like the surfaces on the 1871 better, but the coloring of the 1873. I don't particularly like the pits on Liberty's body. That's what's really holding me back. That and he won't budge on the price.

If you're not crazy about either then I would try to find a better one.

That's what a wise, patient person would do. But I've been searching for 6 months now and I'm starting to get tired of it.

Understandable, but being as you, or so I assume, will be spending much more time living with your decision, any additional time invested into finding the "right" coin can be viewed as time well spent.

As for the two shown examples, I am not all that fond of either and still think you can do better.

What about the 1870 one on eBay right now for $450?

I like the 71 bc it's graded. But that's just me. I own an 1842 in F-15 NGC and it helped me sleep better at night knowing it was legit bc my main buying venue is online. But since you seem to be doing your due diligence go with the one you like and that's in the best grade you can afford.

edit - and I'll add it is quite tough looking for problem free, eye-pleasing seated dollars. I went through this for about 3 months before I found one I truly liked.

This the seated dollar I would buy. Many due to date. Price is reasonable.

I like the look of the 1873 due to contrast and possibly a poor photograph of the 1871.

While I like the contrast of the 73, I think I would have to go with the 71. This is mainly based off of the hit's on the 73 that I know I wouldn't be happy with.

    the 73 is a more eye-appealing coin.
