Yea, when I first started, I did a Dansco 7070 with good to extra fine examples. It is a great way to learn the history of our coinage.

I remember trying and getting all of those seated types, even though they all look a lot the same. I haven't gone back and started any seated albums; that 7070 was enough for me.

But you just got to love them. We did a lot of things right with that design.

At first! Wouldn't you love a no stars quarter and half. Gobrechts original design is hard to beat. Only bettered in my opinion by the draped bust trade dollar and st gaudens $20

And a lot wrong, depending on the denomination, or at least that could've been better from an aesthetic point. Fine coins nonetheless.

It doesnt help is that, at least in the Red Book, they include both "no drapery from elbow, tilted shield" and "drapery from elbow, upright shield" as the same variety.....THAT'S TWO VARIETIS!

The way I see it for the SL varieties is this:
    Half Dimes - 5
    Dimes - 6
    Quarters - 6
    Halves - 7
    Dollars - 2

    26 coins!!!

I come up with 6 half dimes. No stars, stars no drapery, stars w/drapery, arrows at date, no arrows lighter weight, Country name moved to the obverse. Seven if you include the hollow stars on the obv 1859 only.

The CSA Half maybe? That'd be a strict requirement on type collectors ;)

edit - I figured it out methinks - The no arrows, no motto 1856-1865 halves

edit2 - nm, thats just the same as the no motto, drapery already listed. so it could be 6 or 8 if you want to consider the weight changes along with the device changes

A date/mintmark undertaking of Seated coins is a horrendously difficult task with many incredibly scarce coins and some coins downright rare. Buying for type is really a great luxury as you get to pick and choose what fits your taste and budget.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I am buying for Type. And luckily, the 7070 Type set (on the NGC Registry) doesn't get quite that insane with the subtypes. It just has the major subtypes. Any more than that and I think I might go crazy (especially since many of the earlier ones are very difficult in PL).
