Oh wow you're good!! I had no clue this series had so many varieties paddy! Not a series i collect, but next show, I will be checking dates on every shield i see!!! Wow just wow!!! That is all
The 1869 ML & MPD I picked up at a show a month ago for $15. So very neat variety and two for the price of one. The dealer had no idea as had it @ $30.00. I said what will you take? Collecting variety coins especially varieties that have not even been certified yet. Shield nickels has more undiscovered variety nickels than what has already been certified and listed. Learn what to look for and you'll find some really cool coins.
What does ML stand for? Misplaced letter? Medium letters?? Im not seeing the misplaced date on that one either.. could u give me a clue so i can better visualize it???
Missing leaf notice on the 1869 there's two photos one of the ball with a 1's flag is seen on the ball left. That's a misplaced date, on the second set of leaves on the right side one leaf is missing . Missing leaf variety
On the second 1869 large date over skinny the 1's skinny flag is seen in the fat 1 almost dead center of the 1.
Aaaaahhhhhhh thanx.... its members such as yourself who are passionate about a series enough to find these... that i feel priviliged to communicate these subtle differences on a coin with... if these werr morgans (which im passionate) i could @ the drop of a dime go look that up..other series ive found very difficult to research that info(for free on that intwrweb thing) so's i have alot of trouble attributing/ getting all involved with
I have Breen not as much information as cherry pickers. My advice in this order Obv. 1 check date 2 look at cross 3 look at amulet 4 right hand leaves second bunch from top, 5 main shield 6 arrow heads & feather 7 do horizontal lines and vertical lines cross? Rev. 1 Stars for reverse hub 2 the word CENTS any broken letters? 3 Clash marks? Lastly any other strange pick ups that are not post mint damage.
Next to the Jefferson nickels 1942-1945 for varieties and especially the 1943 date that has to have over 100 varieties , the shield offers the variety collector pay dirt on every hunt.
Speaking of 43 jeffs... i picked up a roll and atleast 2 or 3 have weird overdate lookimg 3s but not the actual cpg 43/2 markers.. any thoughts? Suggestions?
And now that you got me all drooling @ these nickels... would you mind taking a look @ the 1973 quarter im posting in this forum? It appears to be an overdate... i actually forgot all about it til today
Sure thing lemme do tje quarter 1st then ill look thru the nickels and locate the weird ones again...stand by
There is one 43 nickel that has a faint short die gouge extending upwards from the lower ball of the 3. This is mistaken for the 3/2 variety . The true variety looks like a fish hook barb.
