I see wear\rub on the obverse high points and a little on the reverse too. I do see luster peeking through the toning on the obverse and plenty on the reverse...so its a toss up...could go low MS maybe I want to say MS-63 but I think the wear will bring it to Au-58. I think this is one of those cases though, where an higher grade AU coin has just as much, if not more, eye appeal than a clear MS example...looking forward to the answer. Are you going to post your own pics when you get it?
After looking at the sellers pics I think they are a little mushy if you know what I mean. Just slightly out of focus. That being said I still think it is uncirculated. I really like the look of it, but I am tempted to revise my original grade to MS 62-63.
The obverse is 75% covered in terminal state toning (black). It seriously and detrimentally affects both luster and eye appeal. Historically, PCGS is very tough on coins with toning this advanced. If the coin were in an NGC holder I would be less worried. There are some saying that this coin should grade MS65. While the surfaces are very clean, you can't ignore terminal state toning. Personally, it looks like there is trace high point wear, hence my AU58 grade. If this coin is actually mint state, I would expect the coin to be net graded to MS61. Anything over MS62 would be very surprising IMO.
I see. I'm not sure I agree; I think I see color in most of the obverse toned area, and I believe it's just an unflattering image. But I trust your judgement on toning a lot more than my own. Very clear explanation of what you think is going on, and how it should affect the grade. Thank you!
I've been beat to the punch. Appears to have rub marks/wear on the high points of the eagle and lady lib. I think its a very nice AU58, but I wouldn't be surprised if its in a 64 holder. I look forward to Weds.
Thanks for the reply. The toning is what attracted me but the photos aren't that great. Just want to see what it looks like in hand, it does have a return policy if needed. I do have a 1917 that is similar to this one. It's not quite as dark, but it's dark. Thanks again for your take on the toning, hopefully I'll get some better shots and post them soon.
Now that you have divulged that you bought the coin, I certainly don't think it resides in a Genuine Holder. It is extremely rare for someone to do a GTG thread on a NEWP that is in a Genuine Holder. I still think there is wear so I'm sticking with AU58. If I'm wrong, I guarantee that the coin is graded MS61, or MS62 tops. Where is Doug when I'm being tough on a coin? I bet his first reaction was the same as mine.
The toning is quite thick and has significantly muted the luster. I think there is some chance that it could be in a details environmental damage slab as Lehigh said. If not, it looks like there is rub in which case I say AU58 assuming that is not an artifact of the toning. If it is an artifact, a low MS grade would not be out of the question with eye appeal and significantly muted luster being the limiting factors.
It could partially be due to the imaging, but the coin sure looks to have very muted luster to these eyes. When toning progresses to that point, it is no longer neutral to positive, but a negative. In many cases, it is enough for a details grade.
I like em nasty. Don't want a blast white coin of any kind. Don't own one , never will with classic coins. So, it's not a negative for me.
It looks like an unc-ish type of coin, but that line in the toning through the body of Ms. Liberty would make me always think AU58 regardless of what the slab might say.
Thanks for all the opinions. Don't know if I'll keep it or not, depends on "in hand look". Here is the grade that PCGS gave it.
The price differential between an AU58 and an MS62 for this coin is basically zero. So, if you like the coin in hand, and you think you paid a fair price, then I'd keep it. I don't have a problem with that type of toning so long as it doesn't look "gunky" in hand -- hard to explain in words. Just checking out CoinFacts for comparison, PCGS has graded the coin below as MS64. I'd rather have your example's type of toning any day than the speckled dog below. Just my 2 cents... I hope you love the coin in hand! -Brandon
I just wanted to provide an example of why I thought this coin might be in a Genuine holder for environmental damage. I'm just very tough on coins with terminal state toning. I appreciate and original skin but I much prefer less advanced toning.
