My wife had these in a jar of coins and tokens I was going through but she knows nothing about them and I never saw anything like it before. Any information will be appreciated, thanks.
Yes, these are currently used in circulation in Japan. They are big 95% copper coins.Your coin is dates Showa 59 昭和五十九年 which is 1984 in the western calendar. Here's a Wikipedia link for you to see the history of the denomination and some specs. 10 Yen The building is the Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in, located in Kyoto the old capital of Japan. Check all of the coins you have to see if any have reeded edges. That was a variety minted only from 1951 and 1958. Finding one nowadays is kind of like finding a Wheat cent in pocket change.
No, worth 10 yen in Japan. Used daily by millions! Currently worth about 8 cents US. If you guys don't want them send them to me, I use them to buy something from a vending machine next time I get to go to Japan.
Don't know what SASE is. I had a bunch of those coins pass by me recently. I never knew about the receded edge ones. They are actually nice copper/bronze coins to hoard if you can get them for cheap. But it sounds like 8 cents face is probably more than the metal worth
Self Addressed Stamped Envleope The coins add up fast in pocket change in Japan! Would weigh a lot and be a pain to try to carry out of the country in any large amount.
Yeah I bet. But in the US a lot hoard cents. These would seem like a better deal since they are larger though
