2015 Long Beach Expo

There will be some interest in the US Marshals coins at the Long Beach show, but I doubt it'll be anywhere close to the same demand as there was for the gold Kennedy in Chicago.

Depending on the number they're bringing to the show and the limit of how many each person can buy, it may run very smoothly or it may be a little crazy... we'll see. Will try to maybe get a couple of the halves and dollars for our coin club. I like the designs of them and think they'll be a little more popular than the average modern commemorative.

I know im a few days late on this thread, but curios since this might be the first time I go to a show (30-45 min drive for me). Just starting to learn about coins/PMs so I figured id get some learning on and see all the cool stuff. If you were to bring some things you might want to sell, is it just a backpack experience or any advice/tips on that from you regulars?

 

Hundreds of dealers.

My advice is to engage a few dealers in conversation. Ask one you think is trustworthy to direct you to whichever dealer(s) they feel might be interested in your coins. The Penny Lady, who posts here, might be a good start.

 

It's a big show, roughly 400 tables or so. Will take you most of the day to see every table and that is only if you don't spend a ton of time at each. You can pre-register on the show website www.longbeachexpo.com if you want to save the $8 registration fee. Use code MEDIA. You can also see the list of dealers on the website (including me @ table #448) and many of us have websites linked. You can use that to plan ahead what you may want to see first when you get there.

Many people bring things to sell. Best person to sell to would depend on what you're bringing, but with so many dealers you have lots of chances to make deals. Just know what you want for your items beforehand that that'll make things work much better for most dealers you talk to.

Thanks for the advice... found www.longbeachexpo.com/visitors/registration for a free pass. Planning on bringing some cc gsa morgans and a few other toys. Figured id stop by the forum members booths since this is were im getting the advice and try to meet some possibly local enthusiasts.

 

I'm about 30-40 mins away too, coming from tustin-irvine area. It's a huge show, so plan on being there for several hours if you want to make it to every table. I'd say get a few offers first before selling. Also, like someone said it's really good to know the value of things you have. You can check ebay buy it now listings to see what things are selling for. I've been there a lot so now I know a few dealers to avoid. For I instance, I had 30 or so dollars worth of silver in some world coins and a dealer offered 8. I told him I use web sites like coinflation and he told some rubbish about such websites being inaccurate. It was pretty funny to say the least.

 

I was talking to a dealer there and he showed me a check he wrote for the next shows it was close to two thousand! I know it's a big show, a lot of people come, but such a fee for dealers seems absurd. I say this because I feel sorry they have to pay that, also because it will hurt the collectors who will likely get lowball offers for coins. If there's a long list of people who want to sell there, why don't they reduce fees and offer a lottery or something? What do you think? I sold a few times at antique and flea markets. 100 dollars for a day was the most I ever paid. I made a lot that day but the fee kept me from wanting to do it again there. The fees asked of dealers just seems unreasonable.

 

I would guess that the average for a table at the Long Beach show is around $1000 per show. Some up front pay more, some way in the back pay less. But remember, it's really a 4 day show (dealer set up day + the 3 public days) so it's really only about $250 per day. Split your table with another dealer and then it's about $125 per day.

 

Make sure you have popcorn and a video camera.....

I would have liked to have come along to this and get the Marshalls service. Hopefully I'll be able to pick one up at the Denver mint shop later in the year. Next year I'm going to be better prepared for these shows!

 

Oh, that makes more sense. That dealer I mentioned was kinda near the front, so maybe that's why his was 2k. Eventually some day I'll sell there then, maybe when I retire lol (like 30 years away)

 

I'm at table 925, & yes it is pricy, but it's not just the table cost. There is Air Fare, Hotel, transportation, & the $5 Hot Dogs to consider as well. Just hope I don't have to spend all day standing in line to get a US Marshals set.

 

Wish I could come. Been in China for a while now. My partner travels mostly to the FUN show and also to many of the Vegas shows when in the USA for company business. I hope everyone scores. Good Luck.

 

I am relatively new as a collector but recently bought my friend's inherited Indian head penny and buffalo nickel collection. I am mostly interested in Morgan dollars so I would like to sell or trade. Is this something that can be done at the expo? Do you have recommendations? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

 

Yeah. They have tons of graded and raw Morgans there. You should have an idea of what your collections that you want to sell are worth. Are they all low grade coins? Are the key dates there? If you don't have the answered to these and more questions, you won't get top dollar for your stuff. There's tons of dealers, you'll see "buying coins" signs, and most there will buy if they are interested. Just make sure you get a few offers before you sell. You don't want to get lowballed.

 

Has anyone heard how many of the US Marshals coins will be available for purchase at the Mints booth? They usually give us an idea before hand.....but I haven't seen anything :-(
The limited demand and SUPER high mintage limits on these things will ensure plenty for everyone and their dog (bags full of the extras can be used as boat anchors). But if there aren't many at the show it could be interesting. Any ideas?

 

I haven't heard anything about how many will be available and if there is a household limit at the show.

I'm curious what time people will start showing up. I don't think there will be a big demand for these but I was planing on going to the show anyways so I want to pick up a couple.
