Got to love the English and Scottish shillings. Awesome designs, I think they really miss the IND : IMP in the legend but they still look neat. I suppose there's a limit to how long you can claim a title you don't really hold. Although going further back they really give it a try.. Claiming to be kings of France is hilarious !
It's got historic significance so it's ok Don't get me wrong I love to have a high grade coin but the worn ones still have character. My best example is a South Shields 1/2d token from 1794 (this is a small town in England and is my hometown which would have been a lot smaller then) all 3 are so varied they are worth having 2 are XF-AUNC, however one has significant die wear. The third one is F. I keep that because it proves it circulated and I can't let it go simply because this coin has come home..
These 2 I bought a long time ago from a coin dealer: Karl Stephens. This was well before the days of slabbing of foreign coins of any type. The half crown was bought as an AU and the guinea as an UNC. The guinea is fully PL. Along with France, I stopped collecting British coins many years ago to concentrate on Latin American & ancients. As you can tell my interest even then was in historical coins. Thus I'd look for coins of important monarchs or transitional events rather than just rare pieces.
The only coins I'm really working on are the West Indies cut and counterstamped, Indian princely States and anglo-Hannover. Anything else I pick up is just an upgrade that I couldn't pass up
