This is a Lincoln memorial cent I found roll hunting about 35 years ago and lost track of it untill I found the box it was in a few weeks ago. It has a fat ghost 0 under the crooked 1. Any ideas on what this is or how it happened? Rest of coin (Obverse & Reverse) are minted properly. under 10x triplett...
It appears to me that someone was trying to alter the date for some reason and stopped before completion.
I agree, a waste of time to alter but then again, I used to wait an hour each night after I put pennies on the R.R. tracks to get some flats. Could this be a possible clash of some sort? The coin does not look as though it's been tweaked. Only a guess though.
Coin wrapper machine damage. The wrapper finger that crimps the end of the roll scraped the 0 shearing it and pushing it to one side creating the slanted "1".
So I'm taking the wrapping machine in consideration as being the ones that roll open ends and crimp the edge of the role closed with the end coins being exposed??
