Segesta, Sicily, AR Didrachm, 21mm, 8.59 g, c 412-400 BC. OBV: Hound advancing right, on the scent; wheat stalk with three grain ears in background; ΣECEΣTAZIB below, between exergual lines / REV: Head of the nymph Segesta right, hair in band; EΓE-ΣT-AIOИ around.

This one was also acquired from Triton XVIII. Most collectors love a good pedigree and I couldn't believe this one. It appears in a collection published in 1774! No photography available at the time, of course, but it is obvious from the line drawing that this is the same coin. Winning this lot was perhaps the highlight of my collecting activities!

What an absolute beauty, and with an incredible provenance. Congrats!

Incidentally, do you know if there's a reason your picture appears on the small side and somewhat blur? Same photo from CNG's site shows the coin in all its glory :) :

I'm copying and pasting the photos from a word file I use to catalog my collection. I will use links in the future, when available. Unfortunately, my last 2 NY acquisitions were acquired from a dealer at the show and better photos are unavailable.

That sure is one skinny hound. Very nice coin for sure.

An ancient greyhound, perhaps? Prior to the auction, I sent my daughter a file with coins I was considering bidding on and this was the one which really appealed to her, which increases the pleasure of owning it!

I'm a dog lover as well. Tell your daughter it was an excellent pick.

My daughter is 28 and, unlike her 25 year old sister, is showing lots of interest in the coins she and her sister will inherit. At the NYINC show, she surprised me by correctly identifying several Greek coin types!

I have two grown sons. The oldest has no earthly idea what I see in my coins. The youngest is only marginally interested. My wife thinks it's a waste of money and time. Oh, woe is me!

Thank the gods for Coin Talk and similar forums where other collectors appreciate our prizes nearly as much as we do!

Acquiring ancient coins expresses an existential yearning for history that isn't easily understood by non-collectors.

Wonderful! The pedigree adds a lot to an already attractive coin.

One of us, one of us, one of us... :android:

My little brother got more-or-less interested in collecting for a little while. Has a small but pretty impressive collection for someone of his age. Unfortunately he's lost interest and it doesn't seem like he's going to pick up the hobby again anytime soon. He's twelve so I can kind of understand him not being into something like coin collecting.

Good looking coin, got some nice details on it.

If you want to have larger pictures, you can upload the image to a photo hosting site, then upload it to here. I don't know how good the quality will be but at least it will be larger.
