Fayette County, West Virginia 1831-1976

I found a coin hidden within a stamp collection that I inherited and I have searched numerous times trying to find the coin but have not found anything. One side of the coin says Fayette County, West Virgina on top. It has General Lafayette on the same side. It says 1831-1976 on the bottom. The other side has the Liberty bell with an eagle crested on top and says Liberty bell on the bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

It isn't a coin. It's a medal, a Bicentennial medal to be exact. Just to the left of "VIRGINIA" is the star-within-a-star logo of the Bicentennial. The celebration for the Bicentennial went on for several years beginning about 1973, and just about every state produced a variety of medals to offset some of the expenses associated with those celebrations.

The term "rare" is relative. As a rule, medals like this can have a mintage of 500 to 1,000 or so, but that really doesn't mean a lot. I have Bicentennial medals from about 40 states. Despite the fact that most of mine have mintages around 500, you can find them on eBay for $20-40 depending on size and composition.

The design of yours is rather simplistic, and it appears to be bronze. I don't see the name or initials of the designer, so I'm guessing that the company that produced it used a "staff" designer.

Ive searched and searched and haven't found anything about it. The simplicity reminds me of a chucky cheese token

 

Most of the private mints that produced medals like this rarely kept production records.
