There was a time where I felt very left out as a coin collector because it seemed like everyone (and their moms) seemed to have a Morgan dollar and I didn't. It was almost to the point where I didn't feel like a real collector, as silly as that might sound. So I went ahead and bought a 1921 Morgan. It certainly helped. Especially at first. However I still don't feel like I'm 100% part of the club since 1921's are quasi-Morganish. Eventually when I can afford one I will get one of those fancy 18xx Morgans everyone seems to have. Anyway, which coin made you feel left out? A coin it seemed everyone had except you. Let us read your story...
I would second your mention of the Morgan Dollar. I'm pretty sure I only own one right now (that my grandmother gave me) that turned out to be an early die state of the Scarface VAM.
Hmm, good question. I would say probably a Bust Half Dollar, everyone seems to have a great one. I bought mine in 2014, and I am very happy with it.
That would be me. I have been looking at them lately since my Morgan collection is nearing completion, there are even some of those that I may never have the opportunity to own. I found myself wondering if most collectors get the hardest ones to come by first and then aim for the easier ones or the other way around. It seems with the Morgans that I should have started at the top because after several years the top seems to get farther away.
I think that's the way to go. Get the more "challenging" ones first then go downhill. It just seems like more fun and the more logical thing to do financially, in my opinion.
Awww c'mon, there has to be one that you went for "out of turn" just to fill that urge. I'm not saying compare yourself to others. Just saying sometimes us humans want to get in on the fun. It's just human nature. Are you not human??
I don't collect Morgans either. I inherited about 45 of them, but don't really even look at them. Most are in circulated condition, but all different dates. Also, I only own one heavily cleaned Bust half. Seems like that is the other popular coin. I just don't have the budget to collect these coins.
First thought was buying a 2009 UHR at issue price and getting a 70PL, shoot I'd take a 68 at issue price. I still am bummed about that one. Oh, I'll also add in Bust quarters taking off and never looking back (relative to Bust halves/dimes) ... didn't see that one coming.
I think for me was a $20 gold. At first was any gold. I always focused on early silver and copper I still don't have a $20 liberty I've bought and sold a few but never had one I really wanted to own
I think it might be a trade dollar for me. I feel a little left out because I don't have one. So I'll look, I won't see one I like for what I'm willing to spend, and I forget about it for a while. Then one day someone posts a nice trade dollar and I start thinking about them again...
Took a long time before I had one. Now I'm hooked!! About 50% complete including proofs be careful these are addictive!!
When I really started to understand what this hobby was all about (still learning, but at least now I have SOME understanding), it was the Capped Bust Half and St. Gaudens Double Eagle. I now have some of each. I don't have my "it" coin in either series yet. When I venture into a new series, I tend to buy a common, decent value coin so I can have one on hand while I learn more about the series. As I work on my Type set, I target certain coins. I just purchased my first SLQ. I'm taking a purchasing pause for a few months. I will be looking for a nice Trade Dollar for my next addition.
pre-1933 Gold. Hopefully I'm going to buy a double eagle this weekend though. other than that, trade dollars and bust dollars.
I do this too - a notable example would be military payment certificates. My first purchase was a note that is common in high grades and not expensive.
I can agree. Did just that with trade dollars and early dollars both. Have also accumulated many nice honest coins that are not expensive but quality. I can't resist nice original better grade 19th c coins with good surfaces
My little cousin talked me out of my S VDB a couple of weeks ago for his birthday. It was the only hole left in his album that I gave him several years ago. He has saved his money and would buy a coin or two when he found one that he liked. It is now the only small cent that I don't own. I was happy to help him complete his set and give him his next album (Jeffersons with proofs) though.
it was $2.50 gold indian. I had to sell it because of bad times. I have not bought another 1 since then. to many other coins first. maybe the end of this year...maybe sooner. lol
Funny, with the exception of the bust halves mentioned above (and I probably have over 400 of them) I have never owned--nor do I have any yearning ever to own--any of the others named so far.
