Most of you know I generally do not collect Byzantine coinage, but I found this coin in my hands this afternoon, and I'm having trouble identifying it. There is nothing left on the obverse, but there is a pretty well detailed monogram on the reverse. At least send me in the right direction.
I would guess Zorro, but http://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=monogram says it might be Zeno, but I am just guessing...
bing, it may be zeno...but i'm not good at reading these. check out here... http://www.ancientcoinmuseum.com/HistoryPages/LATEROMANIMPERIALMONOGRAMS.html ooops...AN beat me to it.
i think your right bing, look at the bottom of AN's line at the "byzantine monograms"...i'm thinking is looks like the first one, justinian i monogram of cherson??
its a Justinian I from Cherson (around a third down on the page): http://esty.ancients.info/Cherson/ I'm kinda surprised, like you said, Byzantines aren't down your alley. Random purchase?
