I am attempting to establish a discussion about this and similar coins which I believe to be Cu/Ni off-metal strikes. If anyone with one of these coins is still paying attention, where did you encounter the coin? join the discussion: http://www.cointalk.com/t204525/
My father in law has a huge collection of wheat pennies and we found 2 1958 D pennies with silver (looks like it may have come off a dime), type playing on the front and back. When I looked under a microscope, it looks like it may have been stamped off a dime? It doesn't cover the whole penny and when I put a dime on it it looks real close to the size it would have stamped. These Pennies could have been in my father in law's collection since 1958 as he has been collecting things since the early 50's. I will see if I am able to post the pictures from my phone. If not will post them later. Also, found a 1941 wheat penny that has an extra 1 in the front of 1941 so the year looks like 11941. I looked über a microscope and the first one is parallel to the second one, it looks like it has aged and was stamped. The only difference between the 2 1's is that the first one is a little bit shorter like the bottom of the on melted and spread a bit. I can't find anything on that one, but it does look stamped, has the same copper coloring, and is pretty clear. Anyone have any idea about this one? Again, I will post a pic of that one as well. Can't do it from my phone so will post them later.
Back in the '50's we used to take a penny and cover it with mercury from a thermometer. Mercury adheres to copper readily.
