I have recently acquired this note and I'm trying to find out the value. I don't know much about currency, so some help would be appreciated.

Is that an auction record or from a book?

The series 1935G $1 Silver Cert. (No Motto) is fairly common. The version (With Motto) is usually worth 2 to 3 times more in a similar condition. The $47 quote from above is from a recent Sept. 2014 Heritage Auction Archive.

A little tip with imaging notes, if you can, use a faltbed scanner rather than a camera. When scanning, place a dark sheet of paper over the note to help define the edges which if scanned against a white background can appear less defined around the white paper margins of the note.

MS means Mint State and since notes are not "minted", paper money grading does not use the MS terminology.

You can learn about PMG and PCGS currency grades and what they mean in terms of a notes condition that earns the grade on their sites linked to above.

What do you mean by common? Are there many in the population for the grade? You can find this out on any Heritage Auctions page for similar notes. See attached screen grab. HA accounts are free and each lot has background information drawn from pop reports from PMG and PCGS as well as Bank Note Reporter values, and past auction results.

For common series of notes there may be a higher survival rate and perhaps more of them in better condition and perhaps more of them certified, but not necessarily due to costs to certify commonly available notes may not be worth the expense imposed by the TPG.
