My first coins to arrive in 2015 were a lot of three which I showed at the end of last year. They arrived today with this coin being the sole reason I purchased the lot. The other two coins I will post in their own threads soon. C RENIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind REVERSE: Juno Capriotina in biga of goats right, C RENI below goats, ROMA in ex. Struck at Rome 138 BC 3.6g, 16mm Cr231/1, Syd 432 Family history figures strongly into this unusual chariot type, showing the goddess Juno Caprotina in a chariot drawn by two goats with pronounced horns. In this case scholars suggest the moneyer’s family was from the Italian city of Lanumium, as Juno Caprotina was worshiped there. I have not been able to find an explanation for the use of goats.
oh cool, yeas i remember that lot. i don't remember what the other coins were but i recalled one was a nice republican. those are some sweet goats!
jw you need to keep these awesome goats away from Steve, you know he loves big horn goats, great coin, super details, love it...
A local magazine article on a goat farmer provided the information that the average American (North, South, just US???) consumes 1.5 pounds of goat a year compared to 67 pounds of beef and 79 pounds of chicken. Proportionally, my collection is goat heavy compared to chicken or cows, bulls and oxen as a group. Philip V Thessalonica with baby Jupiter aboard
Those Thessalonican dancing goats look like they belong in Goat Simulator. That said, I might buy the coin, but definitely not the simulator. Some things are just too weird...
It's evidently an acquired taste. Years ago I lived a few blocks away from a Greek grocer who always had plenty of fresh goat meat in stock. I tried it several times and never warmed up to it. I'm not averse to gamey meat - I've had plenty of goose and venison in my day, but goat was of the smelly-sock kind of gaminess and I just couldn't stomach it. Maybe I just got a sour goat? Anyway, nice coin Bing. The goats are superb, as is the portrait of Roma - a perfect little denarius!
Nice goat coins, never seen a goat being used as a horse. As for eating them, it really depends on how it is cooked. Although I eat goat some styles are really smelly and even I can't stand it.
I've lived all over the world and many places eat goat. I can honestly say I've never smelt or tasted goat meat that I liked. YUK!

Wow => awesome coin Bing (great, great goats, my friend) Oh, but for the record, I was kinda angry and felt kinda crappy after watching goat simulator (that wasn't very cool)
I don't get the simulator, but for the record, this coin is in honor of our friendship little brother. Glad you made it back from Flin Flon.
Thanks dude => yup, the Flin Flon trip was a total success (we saw lots of great new mining-stuff ... work-stuff) Oh, and I really do love your cool new goat-coin (it made me smile) 2015 is gonna rock, brother!!
Battle goats--a chariot with a built-in battering ram! I've actually had goat at a Jamaican restaurant--it wasn't half bad.
