I'm keeping this as hypothetical as can because I don't want anyone thinking I am posting a wanting to buy thread under coin forums. I have a lot of respect for the members and staff of CT and don't want to violate any rules and get a reputation as a trouble maker. I am wanting to put together a graded set of a certain coin there are only 8 different grades for this particular coin and I have 3 of them as they are rather inexpensive. Now my search is for the lower grades some of which only have 2 as the population, thus presenting my challenge. I know a well known member here had a 1908s Indian Cent graded set that had one piece for each grade given I saw it years ago on here and thought the concept was novel. Just recently I have found a certain coin while it has low mintage it is still very affordable and I would like to the same thing. Is there anyone here that can give me advice as to how I can locate a coin that has a population of 2 or 10 or 20 without watching eBay day and night hoping it shows up. I assure you this isn't my life's quest just something I thought would be fun to undertake and since an MS70 would only fetch a few hundred I thought it worth the pursuit. My main concern would be an MS63 that has only 2 in that grade. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I hope I didn't cross any line with this post, but I don't believe comments are allowed on the WTB forum.
With so few graded, why not buy some raw, and grade your own. then you might own literally the only one of certain grades
I have a feeling your answer will involve passing around a "want" list to some dealers. It is much better to have 10 sets of eyes out there looking all over the country at shows and searches, than just you alone.
Lots of people do grading sets like this and run into the same issue. Sometimes some of the lower grades have really low populations. And as just mentioned it would probably be easier, but more costly, to locate your own and get them graded.
This was my first thought, but I think it would also help to know what coin you are seeking. I really don't consider your thread as an attempt to circumvent the rules. Rather, the more information we have, the better to provide suggestions. Chris
OK the coin in question is 1994-P 5C SMS FS. I have the 67FS,68FS,69FS and just thought it would be cool to have one of each different grade. These coins are rather low mintage and affordable. I also have the 1993 Jefferson Coin and Currency set. I don't know it just appealed to me and I collect nickels so I thought why not. If this post crosses the line feel free to pull it although I'm not soliciting or trying to sell just trying to get help with a project. Thanks for the advice.
Wow! That might be a tough one considering there were a little over 266,000 of the sets produced. This might come as a surprise to some, but have you given any thought to intentionally marking some to bring their grade down? Chris
