Major cuds are not all that common on ancients but I have a couple. From 5th century Aegina, the turtle swims with a cud. I have seen other examples from this die but they are not common (or popular - most collectors consider it a fault to avoid). Of similar date this reverse die of a tetradrachm of Syracuse started cracking and progressively fell apart before they got a replacement die ready. At that time, they seemed to be using one die set and one striking team at a time. This city's coins have been studied extensively and this die can be followed as it fell apart. Mine is not the worst but shows a cud behind the head of Arathusa on the reverse. The coin is weakly struck on that side suggesting the strikers were favoring that edge trying to make that die last longer until the engravers were ready with the replacement. Line cracks are common on ancients. The Provincial from Nicopolis of Gordian III below is a bit unusual in that the die was bending so there is a step at the break. It looks like he is riding on a ridge.

Do you guys think this is a Rim Cud? The Edge of the rim is smooth and the cud looks like its on the edge on the reverse side. Thank you
Yes, the Nickel looks like post-mint-damage (PMD). You might find cents similar to your 1980 cents on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Errors-/524...gn=-1&saslc=1&_salic=1&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50 Perhaps coins with your type of cud might sell for $20 each. Someone that sells coins might be able to give a more precise answer.

Oh boy, I have a ton of these, but not as dramatic as most of yours: trio of 1840's with minor rim cuds: Two states of 44 n3, one with minor cud, then it let's loose: a nice rare 56n1 die state with 2 cuds: I have tons more but I don't want to post them all...
