A lady contacted me on a collection she was looking to either liquidate or gift. "Thank you for your email response. I appreciate the time you took to write back to me. I also documented the purchase price of the coins from receipts I had, and I attached the PDF for your review. I know I won't realize a figure of that size due to numerous factors; however, the coins are in excellent condition and packaged well. This is an overwhelming task for someone like me who is illiterate in the coin world; however, I appreciate the history and beauty of each coin. The collection really is a history lesson of the U.S. I was trying to think of a way to offer the coins to children, young adults, and adults alike in a contest manner offering coin-by-coin, by sets, or by collection in exchange for a mind blowing essay, cartoon, video, artwork, etc., proving that the recipients understand our history and the founding principles are nation was built upon. In return the recipient will receive a tangible piece connecting them to America and American history, and America continues to grow with pride each person I reach. Could you imagine the "wow" factor a youngster would have in earning something like this? I can. Just a thought I have. It would be more rewarding then receiving a check. A grandiose idea, which is complicated." Any recommendations on how to point her in the right direction?
Wow. Good luck helping on this one. Maybe have her talk to some AP history teachers in her area to setup a contest. I would have loved to win something like this when I was a YN.
I see a bunch of stuff that would have been purchased through HSN/Coinvault type venues. The rolls might provide high-grade specimens for registries, but that would need to be broken up and sent away. There are some folder sets, ex: Lincoln cents, Peace Dollars, etc that depending on condition might be sold individually. That's as far as I've gotten through the pdf. edit - If she's giving a bunch of it away, maybe talk to her local coin clubs. They could help her out depending on how active they might be?
Both opened fine for me. No problems, download and opens in Adobe Acrobat. Maybe some need to update or even download the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader application.
I would agree with the idea of talking to a local coin club. If she really want's to give it away they should be able and willing to help her do so or come up with ideas for such. If she want's to liquidate the collection (or a portion thereof) they too would be able to assist.
If the list of NGC and ANACS coins has grades...that would help and easy ebay check on value. Mint sets etc, again ebay value from completed auctions. Once done with that, there would not be a ton left to chase. Then with some idea of value, she can decide next steps. Since there are many that have multiple quantity...she could do a number of things.
It's a tough call. Lots of moderns. Some potential on the small cents and other coins. The question really is, what do you want to do? How did you get involved? Do you have the time to sort through it all and value it? I wish you luck.
Actually if they lived in my area I would send her to my local shop. They would purchase some of it. I would also point out she could make more selling it herself on ebay - but then you have to pay fees, do the shipping, maybe deal with bad buyers, etc. So for myself with some of what I saw in the list I would just sell to the local shop to save myself that hassle. Just my opinion.
