Hi everyone. I won this bust half over at coin zip. It's a birthday present to myself (my birthday was back on the 30th). It's also my first bust half. Just got it yesterday. I plan on submitting it to ngc for grading. I paid $71.51 for it (including a 10% buyers premium). Your thoughts? I hope I didn't overpay. Any ideas on what it will grade? Thanks.
Overton 116 "small O". Should grade out in the F-12 to 15 range. At 75 bucks you did fine. Question? Why spend an extra 40 dollars on a 75 dollar coin?
So you think I shouldn't send it in? If I get it slabbed, will that make it easier to sell if I decide to in the future? Or is it just a waste of $ since it's probably only F12-F15 as previously stated. Thanks.
A slab MIGHT add 10 bucks to the price you'd be offered. Just not worth messing with, IMO. NOTE: There are others who would swear that it is unsalable without a slab. Obviously, that statement is wrong since you bought it raw.
Wow. Thanks. Looks like I will save my grading $ for some of my other coins... I have a 1922 wheat cent (possible "no d" variety), and 2 Barber dimes (1894o and 1897o) that I would like to submit. My only concern is that since they are dug coins, ngc won't grade 'em (I can live w/ a details grade), and I'll just be wasting my $.
Dug coins usually have problems, like corrosion and damage from moving around in the soil for ages and are not usually worth grading unless they are rare and can be professionally touched up (ANAC"s does this for an added fee called conservation.) But it would still come back as cleaned or details. Thanks for the info Tommy. The two Barber dimes are important to me, as they are the only two coins I currently have with a mintage of under 1 million (that's why I'd like to submit 'em).
Hi H.D. I use a Minelab E-Trac. FANTASTIC machine, IF you take the time to learn how to use it properly. Yes, I dug both the Barber dimes with it. I have also found 3 seated dimes (but scratched 2 w/ cc mint marks ), 1 STUNNING 1861 seated quarter, a 1922 wheat cent (possible "no d"), an 1837 large cent (holed, but it's my only largie), and a chinese cash coin from the 1700s (my only 18th century coin found to date). If anyone wants, I can post pics of some of my better finds over the years.
The coin in question was the suject of another recent thread (within the last week IIRC - started by the seller). If you missed it, perhaps you would like the check it out.
I agree 100%...... besides these old gals like their freedom I have a bad habit of busting them out while singing Born Free....
