ahhhh, magic shrooms (they grew wild in my front yard when I was growing-up) ... yup, that's one of the cool pluses of growing-up on beautiful Vancouver Island ...

... ummm, what were we talkin' about again? ...

:D AJ graciously offered to put my coin's photos in his beautiful "reflection" template. This was the first coin I'd purchased which I felt was worthy of the presentation.

He also put John Anthony's zombie fouree in the exalted template :wideyed: :D

Roman Republic Anonymous AE Semis circa 91 BC, 6.19g, 23mm

    OBV: Head of Saturn right.

REV: Prow of a galley right "S" before, "ROMA" in exergue

    REF:

This recent coin was speaking to me as the price was good and it's VF- grade in my opinion. I like the engraving style much better than a lot of other AE Semis of this time period of the Roman Republic. This is also my first RR coin.

I find it to be an enjoyable part. Frustrating, at times, but capturing good pictures is very satisfying.

Good luck in your photo efforts! Doug, AJ, and many other CoinTalkers have shared their tips and tricks. Doug's pictures are fantastic but his setup might be more complex than you want as a beginning coin photographer. AJ uses a bare-bones setup and inexpensive camera.

AJ's instructions are here. As for the mirror background, that's a template he created in Photoshop but you can make your own or a similar background with various free online photo editor programs. If you've never worked with Photoshop it may be difficult though.

I never saw this setup before but I have seen your more complicated stand. I think I'll try that with the Nikon Coolpix 8800 soon. I have a optical zoom on the camera so how far would I want the camera from the surface? I want to be able to take decent photos of both small and large coins.

Sorry about side tracking the thread but I'd like to know.

Get a ruler and a coin or two and hand hold the camera at a distance that your camera fills the frame with the coins you want to shoot. Measure the distance from the tripod socket to the coin and apply that number to the construction. One great advantage of using the dowel coin support is that you can make a mistake and make the spacing too large and then correct it by using a longer dowel. You can even have a set of dowels of different lengths so the short one gives greater spacing for large coins and the longer one gives shorter for small ones. When you do the measurement, close counts and it is always easy to take it apart and cut off an inch or two if you made it too long the first time. Every camera will be different so I can not give you numbers in inches. The image from my page does give measurements for the rig as shown but that does not mean it will work for your camera unless it is a Canon dSLR with the 18-55 zoom as shown. My example was made with left over scraps of oak flooring. You can use whatever you want or have in your scrap pile. Failing that, you may have to buy $5 worth of lumber.

Hmmm? ... well, all I know is that my photography skills have been very "shaky" in 2014 ... I'm really hoping that 2015 will bring a few new photo-skills ...

Coins that speak for sure, especially the OP of course
I tend to buy coins that speak to me, but some speak loud

One of them I bought while still a newbie, and at first glance I knew I would purchase it, although at that time it would be a lot of money for my purse. Lucky me, my wife was at the coin fair with me (she rarely does) and said, "yes, that's a great coin, you should buy it". And here it is, thirty years later, still in good place in the trays :

IOVI VLTORI, Jupiter seated left holding victory and spear

    Ref : RCV #7873 (75), Cohen #97

But sometimes, the coin literally screams "BUY ME !!"
As some of you may know, I'm building a specialized collection of coins from a small region of France called Dombes (see here for details : http://monnaiesdeladombes.blogspot.fr/ )
At first, when I started collecting them, around 1998, little was known about them due to a lack of resources (only two references books were available at that time, both edited during the 19th century). In 2004 however Mr Jean Paul Divo, the well known swiss numismatist, edited a new book dedicated to Dombes coinage which became instantly the reference book for them.

One of these coins, a gold pistole struck for Prince François II de Montpensier was described in that book as "unique" and sold at an auction in 1993. Exactly the type of coin you can just dream of, and I did. A lot.

In 2006 a very big collection of feudal coins has been offered at auction, and guess what, a second example of that coin appeared, far better than the first one. Of course, I could only dream of it, the estimation being far over what I could afford. So I passed.
And the coin (that coin) was sold again at another auction one year later...and I passed
And the coin (that coin) was sold another time at another auction one year later...and I passed

The dream coin, turning and turning around you, and screaming "BUY ME !!" "BUY ME !!" "PLEASE !!"
    Quite frustrating, isn't it ?

In 2010 my father had the first good idea of selling his mother's house (she had passed away five years before and difficult the decision of selling it). His second good idea has been to gift his kids with part of the money he got from the house.

And, miracle ! two month later, an auction offered.....

That second known example of that incredible coin, which is now one of the highlights of my collection

    Thanks for reading

When one's wife says you should buy a coin, you should buy that coin.

Indeed. My wife actually offered to loan me the money I needed for a certain coin! Imagine that. I thought it was very sweet, but I declined. I don't believe coins should be something one goes into debt for, even with a wife.
