I have $1,250.00 to spend on coins, what should i spend it on?

I hate to be the newbie who goes around giving advice, but I definitely wouldn't go with the low-grade bust dollar. You'll probably end up wishing you would've spent your money on something nicer looking, and anyway, for $1,250 you might as well get something that displays nicely (not that all low-grade coins don't, but hopefully you get what I'm saying). Personally, I'd go for either the $20 gold piece or the $10 gold piece + silver.

 

I think I'll probably go for the double eagle, depending on what they have when i go to the shop . thanks to everyone for all the help

 

I vote other. I'd get a nice MS 63/64 $10 Indian Gold piece. If anything leftover, 90%.

I picked the low grade bust dollar. Cause you can buy a common date like 1799 in fine with good original surfaces. Which is a coin with a ton of appeal in my opinion A $20 not a bad idea or try to get a tougher date $10. Like a type 1 or a cc. Or my pick would be a nice high grade trade dollar. A nice original ms 62-3 of a more common date or a nice au 58 of a bit tougher date

I've heard that Maine has just as much trouble with Canadian poachers sneaking back and forth across the border.

Make the residents from other states pay a toll to enter. Make them pay an additional toll if they take game out of the state.

I'd buy a couple of $2.50 Gold Indians and save the rest for 6 more months until we see how low the price of silver is gonna fall. Should go much lower, just a gut feeling.

 

I was thinking the same thing, the Indian gold $10 Eagles are priced incredibly cheap at the moment. You need to be careful though, as there are plenty in lofty graded holders that while technically making the grade, are still pretty ugly coins. You would be better off buying a pair of Indian $10 in AU58-MS62 that are real nice looking coins rather than an MS63/64 that has some funky color issues in spite of the high grade. In any case, not going to be much left over for silver, maybe lottery tickets instead?

 

Are you building a collection, or are you building an accumulation? If you want to buy random stuff to accumulate silver and gold, then it doesn't really matter what you buy. Silver and gold are silver and gold (some of it is more interesting, like pre-33 vs. modern), but it is all Ag an Au. Quantity over quality here might be more interesting to you. The bullion folks will probably shoot me for saying this.

However, if you are building a collection, buy a key date for your set. Buy a coin with really nice eye appeal, a real quality coin that will further your collecting goals.

If you haven't decided to pursue a set, this might be a really great opportunity for you to start. Depending on what you choose, that amount could give you a good start to a nice collection.

 

I can't really afford to build a set of coins this expensive, i'd just like to have one or two nice ones. the only reason i have this money is because i sold some silver at $35/oz and forgot about it until i cleaned my safe out this morning . I accumulate Junk silver and i mainly collect Morgans, Peace dollars and Seated Liberty coins. I've always wanted a liberty head $20 though.

 

That's the northern part of the state. The whole north west part is unpopulated wilderness. And northern maine is where the men are men and the sheep are scared!! I like the idea of raising the tolls for out of state drivers. I'd really like to double the property taxes of anyone who foesnt call this state there primary residence. What I really want to know tho is why is it called tourist season if you can't shoot them?

 

I'd say it's not a bad time to buy them. If I had a bunch of extra money I'd pick up a few nice $20s with good eye appeal libertys and st gaudens both

 

Like this? While this cost considerably more than $1250, I also figured now was a really good time to get one. However, this definitely fits into the set I'm building (I'm working on a type set).

 

It's called "tit for tat". We aren't allowed to shoot snowbirds in Florida, either.

I would either buy a Bust Dollar or split the money between three or four nice certified 19th century type coins.

As for currency, the $500 FRN is boring compared to large size type notes. For $1250 you could buy a really nice certified Bison note and have some money left over to put toward a Chief.

But that would be if I were spending the money...
