No I didn't start this thread I made a comment and got chastized for it. Just because I stated that I but the book before the coin. Introduced this stuff into this thread? It is sourcasum and that is what it was ment to be. Everything I said was pulled apart and people put things in my mouth. That wasn't said or empiled. It seems to me that the people here have no intension of doing anything except beating someone one up for making a very good statement. I have always been told BUY THE BOOK BEFORE THE COIN! It has proved to be nothing but helpful to me so I passed it on. I'm sorry. Why not say something to the people that has taken everything I have said out of context. And apparently you read things the way you want as well. I'll tell you what all you people collect as you see fit. I have gotten nothing out of this group except a bunch of crap. I thought this might be a great place to share, help and learn. All I have learned is no one cares about collecting, no one seems to want to do anything except beat up on someone that likes the idea of buying a book before the coin. You all go ahead and play with your junk $2 and $3 dollar coins (it seems to make you happy. I'll keep buying my books and learning about what I'm buying. I can't afford to buy a $1000 coin and no nothing about it. Have a great new year and good luck all.

    Happy New Year!

Well, you just keep doing what you are told, others can do it their way, I see no harm in that. You should probably reread some of your own posts. I did not put down anyone who picks up a penny off the ground for their collection, anyone who collects all condition of coins, anyone who sticks their collection by year into an album, anyone who buys $2 or $3 coins, etc. I also didn't call anyone's collection "junk" ... just some food for thought.

You know I'm sure I'm wrong. I have tried to close my account so you don't have to worry about me and I DONT HAVE to put up with this. I signed up to learn talk and help. I have more then enough to do with out this.
The clubs and groups I belong to seem to like people that share yet this place is way far fetched. This may be a great place but with the way I was treated just by stating buy the book first then the coin. Lol if theybdidnt want an opinion why ask? Please if it is possible just cancel me and you all can go on with your ways. Apparently you all already do it the best way you can and there is no room for suggestions.
Please contact someone else. You can't help someone that can't help themselves so I'm already gone. Thanks.

Sarcasm can't be read. Here look at this:

    "I love cats."

Did anyone read my sarcasm in that statement?

Well if you would read you will see that 99% of what I was saying was it is good to learn so when you are collecting with your children you will be able to answer their questions. Again you must have only read what made you feel good. Not what was said. Everything I talk about to new people is COLLECTING is a cheap way to spend learning with your children. I am all about children and their collecting, getting them away from the TV and games, spending time with them. Again you only read what you wanted to.

    Mr. Hughes,

I do not believe that anyone said nor implied "books are stupid". To the contrary, those promoting the concept of books not always being necessary have admitted that even in their opinion, quality references can be of great value. Their point is only that, depending on how one wishes to start collecting, there are, or at least can be other viable options. There is nothing wrong with one who wishes to enter into this hobby starting out with junk bin widgets, and doing so without owning a single related coin book; it is simply not necessary. However, there are those who do not wish to start out at such a level, or wish to quickly jump into more costly material; for such people, and there certainly are a lot of them out there, buying the book first is solid, tried, and true advice, but even then the "right" book can make all the difference.

I agree. I started with junk pennies and NO book. I believe this all started because I went to a thread "How to buy US coins and not get Victimized" I stated buy the book first"! To me if you are worried about being Victimized learn and there is a better chance of coming of of it intact.
I got a message and went to it. I had people telling me (more or less I was crazy). After posting very nice replies I was done (I don't have to defend myself or my opinions to anyone about my hobby). I stated that I was done. I got more alerts and I look and he we went again.
I did not realize that the alerts were from every conversation I had been in. For this IM SORRY! I don't care how people do their thing I will always do mine my way. If they don't want to buy a book don't. I have given more 2015 red books away then not. When talking to people about my hobby I ALWAYS let them know that it is a very good way to get your children away from TV's and games. It is very easy to go to the bank and get a bag of pennies and set down with your children and have hours of fun and when done still have almost $50 that they can take back.
I suppose I was getting on every thread? I don't know. But again I found this place because I love this hobby and I love to help as well as learn. I'm no one special but as a matter of fact I just had an essay and gave away a youth and adult membership to an association I belong to. That is how much I like this and sharing.
I don't take being jumped on in a group because of an opinion. Everyone has their own, but when it kept on after I ask and said I was done I will defend myself. I am not a bad person but like I said I will always defend myself no matter what the reason. I guess I brought a lot of unknowing people into this and again IM Sorry.

So with this said I have tried to delete myself from this site. Not because of what I said but because I don't need the grief. If I knew how to take myself off of this site I would. Not because of you nor anyone else I just don't need the grief like I said. My comments may of been harsh if you didn't read all of what I read but I guess if i was going into all of the groups I had posted in it would be rude to me. People not knowing what had been said and only seeing what I was saying.
To ALL the people in all the groups that I put into the middle of this I Apologize and you surely don't deserve this.
I will figure out how to cancel this site (how to get out of it) and I won't bother you all again.
Thank you all and HAPPY NEW YEARS

I don't know why my post keep saying new but for an explanation look at the last one. I have tried to figure out how this works because a lot of what was said says NEW?

I would prefer you staying on as a member. It probably takes a good month or so to be able to get around the site and feel comfortable. It's always good to lurk a little until you get to know the style and ways of the active members that post. Some are very forgiving, some are not. Some are extremely knowledgeable, some need to become more so. If you think this thread is a bumpy road, check out the bullion forum! There are days where a steel helmet is required to survive the pounding. (On both sides.) Worse case scenario, you can always use the "ignore" feature in that person's profile. Stick around. It can be fun. :>)

    Yeah, back to the thread...

I once read something here on CT about intentionally collecting a low grade slabbed set of coins. I don't know the exact criteria, whether the grades were all AG or G or PO ...? The idea appealed to me as an interesting approach. I like to see the various stages of wear on a specific coin type. Obviously, the set would be unique and fairly affordable. I wonder how much literature you need to own, in order to collect such a set? How much fun must there be in searching out or sending in the worst of the worst, while hoping for a clean grade, not the dreaded DETAILS? Just goes to show you, each approach can be unique, each approach can translate into years of fun and enjoyment, books or no books. The TPGs can take out a lot of the risk from purchasing coins you know little about, and NO, I wouldn't CAC a lowest of the low grade set.;)

I have just figured out that post reply and reply are 2 different things. So I'm sure that I probably have a bunch of threads running around. I like talking about coins and paper money and its hard to find people that care. I don't really care if people are forgiving or not. I have learned that when I'm wrong I'm wrong. I'm sure if people look back they will see what happened if they choose to. I don't do anything to harm anyone that stopped after the military. I guess if I would have watched what i was doing I wouldn't have made a fool out of myself but again that doesn't bother me either. What does bother me is that I brought a lot of people into something that didn't need to be. I think I have apologized to them all if they read it.
Thank you for your UNDERSTANDING. I don't go off very often and never on line (it doesn't do anyone any good). And I guess starting a post every time I said something instead of replying (didn't know the difference) didnt help.
    Thank you for talking

I'm not sure if you read another of my post but I didn't know there was a difference between Reply and Post Reply. I guess doing that makes what I said more stupid then it was. I Apologize for not knowing (where is the book?) No reason for what happened and since most were post and not replies it was really bad. Anyway now you have the jest as to what happened. Not making excuses just being up front. Again I apologize. This will be something to laugh about for a very long time. Have a good night I won't bother you all any more.

Let's not forget, forgiveness and agreement make for a very short and dull thread.:)

I know what you mean about GDJMSP. ;) (that would be a joke)

Just don't send the guy to the bullion forum, where silver is tanking and hoarders are angry.

I'm not bothered. I just read your posts and tried to guess which ones were answering me. You keep answering, I keep answering, the thread rolls on, no worries...

Don't let it bother you David. It won't take you long to figure out the members here and why they are here. Most are here to learn and help others. Some are here to just argue and pick you apart. Others just post to tick off others. This thread should help you understand a bit about several of the members here.

... others pop in to a thread, stating they don't plan on reading the posts and then throw in an insult. You get all kinds.
