Nice little surprise at the self-checkout

As usual today at the grocery store, I dumped all my change into the self-checkout, then used bills to cover the remainder. As it turned out, I had 99 cents in change coming (strictly by accident, I swear). Normally, that disappoints me, because it means I'll get two dimes and no nickels. But I saw something dingy roll into the change bowl, and what should I see but this:

1951-D, G-VG. I can't remember the last time I got actual silver from the self-checkout; best prior to this was an impaired 1973-S quarter and some wheaties. Made me feel a little better about paying with cash instead of using the credit card with rewards... :)

Very nice. It's been a while since I got any silver in actual circulation.

Same here. I find silver in CoinStar reject slots probably once or twice a year -- I don't get to check them that frequently -- but finding it in change is a lot less common.

It is always a great day when silver coins appear from circulation.

A few years ago I was scanning my items at the self checkout at Kroger and I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the previous person had forgotten to take their change (bills). I casually removed it and placed it in my pocket (I'm evil I know) and when I counted after I left it was $43. Nice day it was.

Best I've actually gotten in change from a self checkout was a terribly worn War Nickel.

That's awesome!! Im a dime lover through and through. That's a nice find. A few weeks ago I get a few rolls from the bank and couldn't believe I found a mercury in the roll. But its always nice to have a nice find in regular pocket change!! NICE FIND!!

Nah; you should see the reverse. On the other hand, if I can't think of anything else to send in for my ANACS freebies... ;)

I got a 1963D quarter in change at the local Pizza Hut last week. First silver quarter I've gotten in circulation in probably 40 years!
