If you would actually show the star I was circling, we might be able to talk about it. Hard to compare when you do not even show the same stars . I am not talking about all the stars touching... show the 4th star from the bottom, and lets compare
When I said 2nd star from the left, I was referring to the 2nd in my close up picture. It is actually the 5th from the left total. Please show a close up of that one.
WHOA! So I just messaged the seller that I was taking it to the FUN show to be seen by the experts after the CT crew questioned it's authenticity, and here's the response I just got: "hi very sorry they are most likely right no need to go to the coin show you can return for a full refund very sorry for my mistake thank you and look forward to doing business in the future kindest regards ally : )"
Kinda seems like the seller knew it was fake? This is my biggest red flag so far. This seems like an atypical response from an eBay seller...
How much did you buy it for? I would still be interested in hearing the experts though. Do you have time to have it seen, and still have time to file a claim if need be?
An AU coin should not have sloppy lettering in the middle of the coin. I don't own gold myself but I'd definitely have a couple pros look at your coin.
I paid $600. If I take it to Orlando with me, I believe I'll be right at the end of the window for returning it. As a side, has anyone ever documented the die varieties considering there were 8 obverse dies and 9 reverse, and the mint had so many coins come out bad that year? I'm starting to be seriously swayed, but would still love to see that.
OldGoldGuy said earlier this was a terrible fake, (to me it looks feels and weighs quite authentic) but if it is, I wonder if one like this has ever been fully documented before? If it is fake, it should be completely documented and probably added to the book referenced earlier! I don't want to get stuck with it, though. Maybe if I just work on getting it weighed to the .001 oz and photograph each element of both sides before returning it? Idk...
Send email to seller, ask for a little extra time to be brought to the show and then returned if necessary. I'm sure PCGS and NGC would like a peek at this coin too if this is a fake they have no seen before. Lots of high rez photos while you still have it in-hand!
