The only way someone is going to nab a package like this, is if they know what's inside. You never hear of this happening with a no date Buffalo or something.

IMO this is either a disgruntled worker giving a "heads up" to a thief, or this is an eBay purchase which means that when the barcode is scanned, voila! No more privacy, the item(s) inside are listed. So probably a shipping handler.

How does an address label bar code identify the contents of the package?

BTW, Doug, I hope they are found soon.

How would someone know the contents of the package, the label wouldn't say the contents. It really is hard telling who stole the coins. Having said that I hope you get them back.

That's a huge hit, I hope you had insurance. Good luck and I hope they catch the bum and get those coins back.

FWIW, I use USPS Registered on those type of shipments. I'm sure that you're aware of that though, again good luck.

They "could" look at the price of the shipment on the label.
If it cost $6 to ship it's not too valuable. A label with $25+ postage means it's valuable, maybe worth stealing. I don't think they knew that coins were in the box but they did know the contents were valuable.

I've seen several posts/threads about USPS behind the counter scanning the box and the items inside are pulled up, so I'm assuming that's how.

I'm just curious...did this happen to you, or are you Doug, or are you just sharing?

If it happened to you, I'm sorry.
If you're Doug, I hope you get them.
    Thanks for the info.

If it was an ebay sale, and they printed the shipping label through ebay/paypal, then yes, when they scan it at the post office, the ebay closed item page appears on their screen.

That's crazy! Is that true?? I've had postal workers scan mine and then ask what's inside. Why would they ask if they can see it?

I am referring to the the actual computer in a post office building, not a handheld scanner. I have seen this with my own eyes.

And I just realized this is about FedEx, not the USPS. So, I don't know.

Yeah the computer at the desk where they scan it. That's what I'm talking about too.

Since is scanned at every transfer point, They can probably tell which point things are going missing. By the fact of were all the packages converge. That would narrow the points they have to look at. Starting at the last point. But they will just have the insurance if it was insured pay off.
Could be a fleabay scam with the package empty at the start since the weight of the coins may not make that much difference on the scales at the shipping point. If bulk pick up, I don't think they weigh again. Could be slight and retaped before going out.
If flea bay, have to see if they show up for sale again by the same seller.

The PO does ask for descriptions of packaged items, for insurance etc.

I know the people at my local post office very well. They have no way of knowing what is in the package when scanning it, even with a Paypal printed postage thing.

In the OP's case, it's probably that someone knew that the name or address was that of a coin shop or dealer, and that is what tempted them.

You would be mistaken. I have literally seen a coin I purchased magically appear on the computer screen when they typed in the tracking number. Only it wasn't magic, it was reality. There is another thread about this as well. Don't know what knowing your postal workers has to do with it, they all use the same computer system. And I assure you, if an item was sold on ebay, and the shipping label was printed using ebay/paypal, I am willing to match any wager you want that if you go to your post office with the tracking number, they type it in, and you ask for them to spin the monitor around at the package pickup desk, you can see the EXACT EBAY LISTING.

I don't see how that's possible. I've mailed many items via USPS and NEVER told them what was in the package. There is ABSOLUTELY no way the bar code can know specifically what is inside. The postage amount and/or the insurance statement could show something of value inside, But the scan cannot.

I respect that you do not see "how it is possible." But, I assure you, and would be willing to wager ANYTHING you want, with odds to your favor, that you are incorrect my friend. Next time you receive a paypal/ebay completed auction printed label, bring it over to the post office. Go to the package pickup counter. Ask him to scan it or type in the tracking number. YOUR EBAY LISTING WILL APPEAR ON THAT SCREEN AS IF YOU WERE ON EBAY YOURSELF LOOKING AT THAT ITEM NUMBER. You can trust me at my internet word as I have seen this with my own eyes, TWICE, or you can go on believing whatever you want, like that the magic tracking numbers and barcodes could not possibly contain a URL link in them. Fail.

Don't you think something like this would be easy to find online? I mean with all the people that use this method. And yet there is nothing out there on the internet saying that this is true. Also, the ebay/Paypal user agreement for printing the labels would have to mention that this info is shared with third parties (aka the USPS). It does not.

If true this is a big fail on the part of ebay and paypal.
