Hello, I am looking to buy a small gold coin (bullion value doesn't need to be more the $ 50.00/$75.00 USD even less is fine.) and I wanted to ask you all if you had any suggestions. I am sure a lot of you have a seen a wide range of coins and have some great advice. I do have some requirements that the coin needs to be in though. did ask this same question on another forum and a lot of people said "I needed to drop some requirements and that my requirements were hopeful" some of you might say the same thing but I thouht I would ask. All suggestions would be helpful. So here they are. The coin must be gold. It must have a mintage of no more then One-Million. Since I have a small budget it can't cost much more then $ 100.00 USD. Thats it, it might be strict but I found one, it is a Guatemala 1861 4 reales. It is the perfect coin but I can't find any for sale. All suggestions are appreciated and I thank you all in advance.
Mexican Dos pesos 1919-1947 or a 1918-1948 Dos y medio pesos. These coins are readily available, very easy to find and some of the years should meet your less than 1 million mintage requirement.
Thanks, I'll look into them. I just want to say that I really like this forum, there is a lot of great advice and quick.
Why the mintage limit of less than 1 mill? Most old coins are a heck of a lot rarer than that nowadays, with 1,000 or less known. You get get a nice worn $1 gold american coin for around $100 if you really look hard.
I think he would have to look a very, very long time to find a US $1 gold coin for under $100. Unless, he got a love token dollar. I would go with the Dos Pesos but you're gonna be hard pressed to find one with less than a million minted. Incidentally, the first gold coin I bought was a Dos Pesos, is was when gold was down and I think I paid $55 for it, I think it was 2006.
I thought a coin with a mintage of 1,000 or so would be really expensive. I know its all about the demand of that coin. but with only 1,000 pieces I would imagine the demand would be really high. Do you know of any witht that low of a mintage (or even higher) for that price?
Well you can buy a Dos Pesos gold coin on ebay right now but the mintage is way above 1 million, that's for a 1945. Not only that, many of them are restrikes. If you can get rid of your mintage limit you should be fine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Affordable-...0648741?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item41898dd825 Here's more information on the 1945 Dos Pesos gold coins. http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces13933.html
Most years don't meet the under 1 Mil requirement, but the 1854-1868 French gold 5 Franc coin can be found for under $100. The 1854 may be the only year under 1 Mil at about 700,000. I bought a nice XF 1858 for $75 recently. Rob

here's a Ebay link for the 1945 Mexico 2 pesos gold coin. link: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...TRC0.H0&_nkw=1945+mexico+2+pesos&_sacat=11116 keep in mind it cost a lot more to make a small coin than it does a larger gold coin. I've been thinking of getting 1 of these 2 pesos coin or a Canadian 1/10 gold maple leaf. I like that the maple leaf because it has the weight and purity on the coin. I have always liked the gold color of a maple leaf being the prettiest gold color out there in my opinion.
Finding a decent one for around $100 is not that hard. Some are former jewelry coins, some have decent wear, but all are old US gold coins for not much money. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1850-1-Gold...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1851-UNITED...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NGC-AU-Dama...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Oops, so sorry for last post. I'm a new member and hadn't properly read the rules. Most sincere apologies!!
If you will increase your spending limit to $135 a whole bunch of coins become available, and since they sell for closer to melt (percentage-wise) they are a much better deal to boot.
