Does it make sense to separate the copper pennies from the zinc ones?

Would it have made sense to separate the Wheat pennies from the others 20 years ago?

    I don't know, would it?

I wasn't alive 20 years ago, but it made sense 10 years ago :)

I throw low-grade, common date wheats into my copper pile. There's only so many ugly 1957-D specimens a guy needs...

Btw I found my first wheat penny today: a 1951D in poor or good condition. Not much, but that got me hooked! And I seperated the coppers; I'm going to sell them on ebay. Thanks for all tips! I appreciate your help!

Edit: I think I might have found some copper '83s… are they worth keeping?

They may look good, but there are no copper 1983's as far as I know. They may have aged nicely and the copper coating may look nice, but they are probably zinc.

@ Morphior - Just remember that when you sell on ebay you have to pay fees. You will need to sell a pretty decent amount of copper cents in order to off-set the cost of ebay/paypal fees and shipping.

Also, there are a few known examples of copper 83's but they are extremely rare. You would need to weigh it in order to know if it is or not.

I'm not sure where you were going with this, but I was looking for Wheaties 45 years ago. They were already unusual in circulation at that point, just 10 years after the shift to the Memorial design -- much less common than copper cents in circulation today. I imagine that was because they looked different, and were financially accessible to small children like me.

I was starting to say that they were also less common than silver in change, but I honestly can't remember which was harder to find by then.

Finished off 11 boxes of cents ($275) that I picked up on Thursday. I am pretty happy with the results.

    121 Wheats (oldest 1912). Including a 1913-D hole filler, 1932-P(9 mil mintage), a bright red 1955-S, and a couple other red/brown wheaties.
    1972-P DDO #3 (or 6...not sure)

    1992-S Proof
    2 1998 WAMs (my 42nd and 43rd)
