Can anyone look at these pictures and see if these look like real silver Morgan Dollars? I bought these off eBay before I realized how easy they are to counterfeit. I am new to coin collecting so I am learning as I go. I just hope I didn't get scammed. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1882-S-1-Mo...BTGW8JgflUZx5bI%2BLbg%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc http://www.ebay.com/itm/1887-P-Morg...BTGW8JgflUZx5bI%2BLbg%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
The 87 looks fine, but the 82-S is too hard to see on my cell screen to say for sure one way or the other. I will say that with what I can see, I do have concerns, but again this does not mean much.
They both look authentic, but I think you overpaid for them, especially the '87. I'd suggest that you learn how to identify authentic Morgans before you start buying them, raw on SleazeBay. Once you can identify a legitimate coin, then the counterfeits will stand out like a sore thumb. Even here on CT, there are sellers who just love people like you buying coins they know nothing about. Chris
Thanks for the quick replies. I do realize I probably paid too much for the coin, but I am learning so I will do better next time. I do want to be able to tell the difference between the counterfeit coins and the real ones. I guess I need a known good real one and a fake one to compare the two. Thanks again.
You'll need more than one since there are many die varieties and die pairings. For example, the 1878 was struck using numerous reverse dies - 8TF, 7TF, 7/8TF, long nock, short nock and so on. Chris
Agree. Both look genuine. They are both common date coins. The fakes are usually the key dates. Buying raw coins on eBay is dangerous. If you're interested in Morgans, there is a good book available by Whitman publishing. It will give you the basics and more about the series.
I think if you save your money a little you can step up and buy nice graded Morgans for $50 and up. I have this one on ebay right now for $62 with free shipping. Coin Talk is a great place to get free info
I'm not really a Morgan expert and I'm not trying to sell my coin. What I am saying is that if I am going to spend my hard earned money on a Morgan, I would like the nicest one that I can afford.
If the date and MM don't matter, might I suggest an 81-S? This date and MM is very common in MS grades. It's also known for having the best overall strike and luster. You'll likely find a graded version at a price point you can handle.
I would agree, I personally like the common dated Morgans. The design is the same as the big dollar coins and they are way cheaper. You are still buying a coin over 100 years old and you can easily put together a nice date run set ( 5 to 8 coins ) in a nice grade for not a lot of money.
80-s 81-s 85--o 87 89 96 are some of the more common dates easily available in high grade cheap. You can also find some like 81-s in prooflike for not a big premium. And if you like nice color and toning too. But if you want a bunch of big silver coins you can stack you can't beat circulated Morgan dollars. I wouldn't say you overpaid but you paid retail. If silver goes back up then you'll have made a good investment. There's far better places to shop then sleaze bay tho
Sorry to be "that guy" that says something different from what everyone else agrees on, but no way that '82 or any other other coins from that one seller are genuine. They are modern fakes, and either cast or hubbed from the same mold, just with part of the date changed. Look again and compare. Pay extra attention to the area between the N in UNITED and the eagle's left wing on the reverse on the coins. Also the dates and MM's look sloppy as is typical for these fakes.
I had the same question on the '82 reverse - looks like bumps or something else near that N... Don't see that on the '87 but that doesn't mean it's legit. I don't know.
Those same bumps in various states of progression are on some of the other coins from the same seller, even other dates/mints.
