I don't think a thread has made me laugh this hard in a long time!! Can we auction the parts off to the highest bidder!! Like a used car!!
It's all because it has been a slot in album since album collecting started. There are no twentieth century coins that are save for a few early quarters. All others just command a premium because they have for so long. The supply is as high as the demand.
I don't believe markets can even exist unless fools over value the marginal and under value the exceptional. Celebs are just an extension of that. How many people even know that Neil Armstrong died or even who he was? But they can tell you everything about some hollywood bimbo who in the real world wouldn't be able to take a grand slam order without hurting herself.
I know and care who Neil Armstrong is far more then any Kardashians lets send them up to the moon and leave em there!
Nah, that's one moon that's pure, unlike Kim's own! I'd rather we all head off-planet and leave these miserable media slugs behind.
But it's made of green cheese lol. Better idea lets round up all those media whores up and ship em off to Uranus.
Help out an old geezer...Who the hedouble hockey sticks is Kim Kardashian? I continually hear her name being slammed but nothing else about her. As for a coin that is famous simply for being famous--I give you the "Bearded Goddess" half dollar.
Actually, this is a very difficult to find coin, especially in late die states. Personally I think the prices are justified for these.
Not really. They seem to show up with a good bit of regularity for an R-5 coin. Anyone with the cash can find one with a bit of searching--albeit perhaps in the "wrong" grade for one's collection. The price is established purely by virtue of its inclusion in the Red Book. It's the prime die state for the O-111 (no crack at all) that is actually hard to find. I've heard of 3 or 4 examples but haven't actually seen any of them.
I think you've nailed it, although I seem to remember that way back when many collectors were unaware that this was simply from die polishing. Would such a coin gain Red Book status today? I doubt it.
I think the lack of availability of these is due to capped bust collectors not wanting to part with them, as they are considered a must-have. Most of the ones I see are VF, though I have seen one AU50 listed for $21k. As far as the early die state with no crack, David Khan auctioned a VG10 off just last week on eBay that went for something around $1000...
I envy you!! I wish I didn't know who she was A talentless money grubbing media whore. Who's only talent seems to be sleeping with and occasionally briefly marrying rap stars and basketball players. Basically a waste of oxygen!! By the way great bust half!!
