does this look like a coin that has been cleaned, it's the best picture I can get you will be surprised when I show the source of the coin
Yes, the giveaway for me is the darkness around the date, figure, stars, and dentils. Everywhere else is clean and doesn't match up.
Yes, cleaned and partially retoned. Not bad looking. In these newer pronged holders with the 2 tone label the grades are all over the place. I'm guessing it straight graded at 45.
Cleaned and retoned not surprised it graded straight with today's market grading looks like a shaded label pcgs slab
CAC has the following paragraph on their website. CAC-verified. Because Confidence in a Coin's Quality is Priceless. Whether you're a novice or advanced collector, you know that quality is what determines the value of a rare coin. However, within any certified coin grade, not all coins are "solid" quality coins. I'll let you come to your own conclusion on this
I'm not sure that darkness at the edges always indicates cleaned. A coin that tones and then recirculated will be "cleaned" like that from bouncing around in pockets for a few years. The issue really isn't cleaned or not cleaned anyway - it's "is this an attractive coin?" Here's another example (from my collection) that shows the same characteristics:
I'm going to disagree with the majority and state that the coin may not have been cleaned at all. The dirt pattern is not unusual for an original coin, but too many folks are mistaken and believe that a partial dirt pattern indicates a definitive cleaning. This is simply not the case and a little analytical reasoning can show why. Also, the coin is clearly circulated and lightly circulated coins picked up hairlines like magnets.
The bust half I would've no doubt said original. The seated dollar looked cleaned from what I can see in the pics. Still does. It appeared to have surface hairlines in the fields as Tom said that may well be from circulation. This is one of those coins I'd have walked away from in pictures but may have really liked in hand. I know coins of mine that look cleaned / too light or unnatural color when photographed that are outstanding when in hand. So I just went from what I saw. You could show me that pic a dozen times and I'd say the coin was cleaned and retoned
And they could be on the plastic too. PCGS saw it out of plastic but I can't say from photos what is what. Photos can lie a lot.
The tpgs have gotten real lax in their standards the past 5 years in my opinion especially pcgs. That's why it's so important for anyone that's serious about collecting early us coins to learn to grade for themselves!! Just cause a tpg calls a coin good does not always mean it is. Cac a help but not foolproof. I buy the coin not the holder. I rely on tpg slabs for 2 things to guarantee a coin is authentic if I can't hold on hand. And to protect the coin from scratches and damage. Me I buy the coin not the holder. In this case is it a original coin I don't know if I could see in hand I could make the call in 30 sec. But I'd have a real hard time buying this one from these photos
I like this thread Take a look at this coin currently in an auction by Legend Rare Coin Auction should it have got a straight grade? Its in a PCGS/CAC slab and it could be marks on the holder but I doubt it. They don't look like pocket scratches to me to be graded at ms62 and verified by CAC. The bid is up to $5200 right now. https://legendauctions.hibid.com/lo...t=1&hide=0&qs=0&view=0&aView=0&q=212&selCat=0
