Another of my November purchases arrived yesterday, so that leaves just four more to arrive. This is actually an example of a coin I already have, and my original example is in much better condition. However, being able to get this second copy at a "Bing" price, I am able to satisfy my curiosity about the "bite" out of the cheek of Roma. I think it's a counter-mark, but I can't make it out. Perhaps it's just a flaw or a bankers mark, but my imagination sees all kinds of images in this flaw. Any thoughts? PVLCHER Struck at Rome 110-109 BC 3.76g, 19mm Cr300/1, Syd 569, Claudia 1 From wikipedia: Appius Claudius Pulcher (c. 139 BC – 76 BC) was a Roman politician of the 1st century BC. Claudius Pulcher was a supporter of Lucius Cornelius Sulla and served as praetor in 88 BC. He was exiled in that year by Gaius Marius while Sulla was away in the east. He returned to Rome after Lucius Cornelius Cinna died in 84 BC, and served as consul in 79 BC and as governor of Roman Macedonia from 78 BC to 76 BC.
I really like the winged victory on this piece. Any idea on the bite? Was the coin tested for purity?
That's how it starts, one bite to the cheek, next thing you know Zombie coins, both coins are awesome jw, Merry Christmas to you...
Will do jw, i have coin club tonight, making finger foods and i'm speaking on how to make coin rings, hopefully my Ancient guy is there so i can add some coin's to the end of this year, he hasn't been there for a couple of Months.
i would guess it's a weird test cut, maybe someone didn't have the right tool to make a proper chop like on the coin at 7 o'clcok, so they just dug in erratically on her cheek with something small?
Awesome score, ya ol' bugger (cool pick-up!!) I actually like the countermark on the face (gives it a bit of character) Kinda like this:
Very nice and a decent price. I wonder what you think of a price of a RR denarius with a hole in it that is $28? That I could get later, maybe.
It's rough, but for $28 it's OK. I have one of these I paid 3 times that and considered it a good buy.
